7 Steps How to Do Expert Keyword Research for Life Coaches?

Keyword research is like a treasure map to your target audience, "X" marks the spot where your content strikes gold.

How to find "X"?

There are billions of searches on the internet every day.

But, how can you make sure that your website is visible to those who are searching for your services?

This is where keyword research comes in!

Keyword research is how you find the "X".

Finding the right keywords to rank for is like finding the "X" on the map.

In this article, we will explain what keyword research is, why it matters for life coaches, and how to conduct effective keyword research.

So, let's begin...

What is keyword research and why is it important for Coaches?

Keyword research is the process of analyzing and identifying the words and phrases that people use when searching for a particular topic.

When it comes to SEO campaigns for life coaches, keyword research plays a crucial role in driving the right traffic to their website.

It helps coaches identify what their potential clients are searching for and how to create content that aligns with their search intent.

Most importantly, it help coaches to understand what their clients actually look for when they search online.

Why is this important?

Think about it...

If you are a life coach specializing in relationship coaching, you would not want to waste your time creating content that is not relevant to your niche like "5 healthiest morning recipes".

Instead, by conducting keyword research, you can identify the most relevant keywords that your potential clients are searching for and create content that aligns with their search intent.

Here is unpopular opinion: You don't want anyone coming to your website, you want the people who actually need the help you can provide.

100 right people worth more than 100,000 random people who are "just looking" around.

You will help more, earn more, and create bigger impact by focusing on the right audience!

7 Steps How to Conduct Effective Keyword Research for Life Coaches:

Before starting your keyword research, it is important to define two essential things: the product or service you offer and your target market or ideal client.

For instance, if you are a life coach specializing in career coaching, you may want to focus on keywords such as "career change," "job search," or "professional development" to create content that aligns with your clients' needs.

Once you know few of your main keywords like "career coaching", "career change", "professional development coaching, use them as the starting point for your keyword resesarch.

My advice is to open an excel file, add the main keywords and create 3 additional collumns: search volume, search intent, and rank difficulty.

Now let's begin with finding related keywords...

1. Find related keywords.

Go on Google and search each of your main keywords. DO NOT click search, just write the keywords and see the dropdown list Google shows of related searches people do for that particular phrase.

These are all related keywords you can add in your excel list.

2. Find the search intent.

Then, search each of those related topics and see what are the top 10 articles in Google. What is your competition creating?

This will give you the search intent behind each of those topics.

For example, if people search for "mindset coaching" and all the articles on Google are about "where to find a mindset coach" or "how to hire a mindset coach"...

..This gives you the idea that the main search intent for that particular topic is making a purchase, it's not informative.

So, your content strategy for that particular topic should honor that intent.

3. Find the search volume and rank difficulty.

Finally, go on Google Keyword Planner and check the search volume for each of the keyword phrases on your list.

Write the numbers in your excel sheet.

Check the competition level, is it high or low?

Write that information in the excel sheet.

Then, go to Ubersuggest or download the Ubersuggest Chrome Extension, and check the Domain Authority of the websites that rank in the top 3 places for those searches.

Write the ranks in your excel sheet.

4. Evaluate your Taret Keywords.

Not every related keyword is worthy of your time and energy. Some are just too difficult to rank for, and some are not that much in demand.

Find in your list keywords that are high in search volume (above 1000 per month) and low in difficulty (competition is low and the DA of top ranking websites is bellow 20).

Bold those keywords.

These are your target keywords that you should focus your keyword strategy towards.

5. Find more related keywords.

Now you can start all over again by finding new related keywords.

You can use the top ranking articles to discover new keywords and add these keywords on Google, see the related searches and go through the whole process again.

You can use Google Keyword Tool to find more related keywords when you are analyzing the keywords in your excel sheet.

You can use ChatGPT to generate similar keywords like your main keywords.

You can put yourself in your ideal client's "shoes" and think of what they might be searching for.

For each new related keyword go through the whole process and determine their search volume, search intent, and rank difficulty.

6. Come up with an effective Content Strategy.

Now you have a huge list of keywords.

Think of 2 to 3 title ideas for each of your target keywords.

This will give you a list of topics you can write for that is aligned with your target keywords.

Remember to honor the search intent for each of the topics so your article can best serve your potential clients' needs.

7. Create SEO content for your website.

Once you have identified your target keywords, you can use them to create content that is tailored around them.

But your content should follow few principles in order to be customized for SEO.

This is called On-page SEO!

On-page SEO refers to optimizing your website's individual pages, including content and HTML source code.

Tailoring your content around your target keywords will increase your chances of ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

There are 4 fundamental SEO principles you should follow when creating content:

Optimize your meta tags, header tags, the text within the content itself, and incorporate internal linking.

1. Meta tags.

Meta tags are snippets of HTML code that provide information about your website to search engines.

The title tag and meta description tag are the most important.

The title tag is the main heading of your page and should include your target keyword.

The meta description tag is a brief description of your page's content and should also include your target keyword.

For example, if your article is about "mindset coaching for productivity," use this exact keyword phrase in your title, URL, and meta description.

2. Header tags.

Header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.) structure the content on your page.

The H1 tag should include your target keyword and be used for the main heading of your page.

Use one H1 tag per page and include H2 and H3 tags for subheadings.

AND most importantly, use your exact target keyword (the one you are creating this article about) within your H1, H2, and H3s tags.

This tells Google and other search engines that your article is truly about that exact topic.

3. The text in the content itself.

Content optimization involves including your target keywords naturally throughout your content.

Avoid keyword stuffing, which can lead to penalties from search engines.

As a rule of thumb, include your exact keyword phrase approximately 1-2% or up to two times per 100 words used.

4. Internal linking.

Internal linking refers to linking to other pages on your website from within your content.

This helps search engines understand the structure of your website and distribute link equity throughout your site.

Use anchor text that includes your target keywords when linking to other pages on your website.

For example, if you want to link to an article on your website called "5 Mindset Tricks to Increase Productivity" that you want to rank also for the keyword "best mindset practices" you can use this exact phrase within your currecnt text to insert a link toward that article.

This will give your other pages more SEO juice for those specific keywords.

Incorporating these fundamentals into your content strategy will increase your website's visibility, attract more traffic, and lead to more leads and clients for your coaching business.

What After You Publish?

You created your content. You click publish. And now what?

Is your article on the first page on Google?

No. If only it was that easy!

You have a customized SEO article about mindset coaching and thousands of other coaches have a customized SEO article about the same topic.

How Google decides who to put among the first searches?

The short answer is: Domain Authority (DA)!

We mentioned DA before when we spoke about looking for easy to compete with keywords, remember?

A website’s DA determines how authoritative, reputable and thrustworthy a website is.

How to build authoritativeness in Google’s eyes?

Have backlinks (links that are leading to your pages) from other reputable websites.

Each backlink is a vote that another website gives to the page it links to. A vote from a newly started website is not as good as a vote from The New York Times for example.

Each backlink carries a different weight depending on the DA of the website linking.

That's why we chose target keywords where the main pages on Google have a low DA, because the higher the DA of the first ranking pages, the harder it is to compete with them as a beginner.

When your rank grows then you can tackle bigger fishes.

So, how to get backlinks for your SEO articles from reputable websites?

To get backlinks from reputable pages with high DA, you need to create high-quality articles that offer more than your readers ask for.

Once you have quality content, you can reach out to other websites in your niche and ask if they would be willing to link to your content.

Write an email to their editorial team using this template:

Subject: Can we be link buddies? ??
