7 Simple Things to Consider Before Visiting the Chateau of Versailles

During the reigns of Louis XIV (1662) and Louis XVI (1789), the French monarchy resided in the beautiful Chateau of Versailles.

It is one of the most impressive palaces of the 15th and 16th centuries open to the public.

Seeing this location for yourself in France is a must when you consider its significance as a setting of the French Revolution and how much what it symbolized to the French people of then (and still) shaped the world we live in today.

But let's not squander the opportunity by failing to plan ahead. Here is how;

1.?????Consider reading a bit about the history

The French Revolution had far-reaching consequences for Western civilization, including the State of Law and the separation of powers, which are now taken for granted.

The signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which marked the official conclusion of World War I, was only one of many important events that took place at the Palace.

Much might be said about the Chateau of Versailles, but I will limit myself to discussing the more pragmatic aspects of a trip there.

2.?????Consider visiting the?Chateau of Versailles’ website

The information you need about Le Chateau may be found on their gorgeous and comprehensive website. More than that, it has photographs, historical context, and maps galore to equip you for your trip.

It will save you a lot of time if you learn about the various admissions alternatives before your visit, and if you can, you should buy your tickets online and print them out at home.

Perhaps you'd like to check out one of the many fascinating displays now on display. Please refer to the website for times and dates.

3.?????Consider how you’re arriving at The Chateau

There aren't many places to sit down, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes since you'll be on your feet all day long touring Le Chateau.

Taking the C train (in the direction of Versailles) from Paris will get you to the town of Versailles in around an hour, give or take. A ticket labeled "Paris - Versailles Rive Gauche" (zones 1-4) is all you need. The T+ ticket does not cover this trip.

It's roughly a 15-minute walk from the "Paris - Versailles Rive Gauche" metro stop to the Palace's famed golden gates. Just go where the majority is.

Now you know exactly what your ticket covers, whether you bought it individually or utilized the Paris Museum Pass. Upon arrival, seeing the Palace is free, but walking through the grounds to the Grand Trianon costs an additional amount. However, kids get in for free.

4.?????Consider the time you’ll be there

The Estate of Chateau de Versailles is massive. Le Grand Trianon, Le Petit Trianon, and Marie Antoinette's Estate are all separate from the Palace and located at considerable distances.

Regardless, it's best to double-check the venue's schedule as it's subject to significant variation according to the performances, exhibits, restoration work, and seasons.

5.?????Consider how to get from the Palace of Versailles to Marie Antoinette’s Estate

A mini-train runs between the Palace and Le Grand Trianon but be warned that it may take up to 45 minutes to arrive and costs extra. While the train travels through the Estate itself, pedestrians must exit the main building and locate the Estate's entrance. It's about a half-hour stroll.

Admissions are always waived at the far end of the gardens. Getting there on time is important to enjoy the glory of the fountains before they are turned off.

6.?????Consider where you’ll eat

In contrast to the exorbitant prices at Le Chateau, there are a number of excellent eateries to be found in the area around the golden gates and on the road to Le Grand Trianon. This location is pretty refined, although no picnics or takeouts are permitted.

7.?????Consider hiring a tour guide

Hiring a tour guide is something you should do without hesitation if money is no object. Audio tours are also available for purchase, but nothing beats having a real person fill you in on all the fascinating details.

I hope you found this brief overview of the logistics involved in seeing the Palace of Versailles helpful as you arrange your journey to Paris.
