7 REQUIREMENTS FOR YOU TO SHIP A CAR OUT OF THE U.S

It is everyone’s dream to one day own and drive his own car. Indeed, it is an achievement when that dream becomes a reality. You do know how it feels to own one, especially a new car for that matter. However, buying a car, even if it is a used one, is no mean feat! The cost of the car plus the insurance fees is abominable.

The decision to ship a car from overseas is not easy. If you want to purchase a car and ship it out of the United States of America, to come to Africa, there are certain information that you need to have. It is an elaborate paper work that requires diligence and a lot of keenness, otherwise the plan may fail terribly.

1.  Certificate of Title of Ownership

To begin with, an Original Certificate of Title of Ownership is a mandatory document, for any transfer process to start. This Title of Ownership must be free from any encumbrances, like the issue of security for a loan. However, if the Title was used as a collateral, then permission must be sought from the Lien Holder, by issuing an original letter plus 3 certified copies of the Certificate of Title.

2.  Photograph Identification

You have to produce some form of identification, with a clear picture of yourself. This may be in the form of National Identity Card, issued to you by the Government of your residence. Another legal document which is acceptable, is your unexpired and valid Passport.

3.  Insurance

You are mandated to present proof of a valid and unexpired insurance cover for the car. This is because, if any accident occurs, then somebody ought to be liable for the same.

4.  Sales of Tax Proof

You have to produce documents as proof of payment of state sales tax when you purchased the motor vehicle. Any motor vehicle transportation company is required, by the State, to ensure that tax payment is adhered to by vehicle owners, before any shipping of the car can be authorized.

5.  Bill of Sale

You are required to produce a Bill of Sale or a document signed by a Notary. This is a lawyer licenced by the Government to execute legal documents, especially touching on overseas matters. This is proof enough for the vehicle transporting company, as owner’s consent, to ship the motor vehicle.

6.  Original Power of Attorney

In the event that you are an agent of a buyer, who would like to import a car, on his behalf, you are mandated to produce an Original Power of Attorney. This is a legally signed document by a Principal, authorizing the Agent to act on his behalf, without relinquishing any responsibility or liability.

7.  Import Duty

This is a payment, in the form of tax, levied on all goods to be imported from overseas.

Conclusion

When you have made that great decision to purchase and import a car, you will be confronted by questions as to the costs involved in shipping the car, modalities of shipping the car, for example, shipment via air or water. You may also need to know more about the motor vehicle transporter and the extent of his liability, if anything goes wrong.
