7 Remarkably Powerful Ways to Be More Seen, Heard and Appreciated

One of the greatest, most common frustrations we all face in our career stems from our own ambition to advance within an organization. We all want more money but with that comes greater responsibility. And, while many of us feel that we are ready for that responsibility, the truth is most are not.

Too many believe that all we have to do is simply deliver consistent, competent results by being more committed, working harder and continually improving our job-related skills. Many also believe that we inherently know how to manage and inspire people, but the truth is we receive little to no training or coaching on how to best do this.

Yet despite this reality, most of us still desiring to advance within an organization experience some level of frustration from not being seen, noticed, heard or appreciated.

Here however, is the simple truth you likely have never realized... those frustrations can be significantly mitigated by understanding that your dead-end outcomes (in this case you not advancing because you are not being seen, heard or appreciated) is more about YOU than it is them.

Why? Because you are never (and will never be) in control of them. You are only in control of you.

We all therefore need to be more introspective, gain deeper, truly honest perspectives on our own behavior so that we can work towards creating the better outcomes we desire.

Whether you are an entry level employee, manager, team leader or even an executive, the person who is relentlessly committed to never be the victim, just knowing thyself and serving are those that are the most seen, noticed, heard and appreciated.

Here are 7 incredibly powerful ways to accomplish this...

1. Know That Your Greatest Opportunities Will Almost Always Come from Adversity

Please understand and come to terms within yourself this undeniable truth... The true measure of the human being is revealed NOT when things are easy but, when they are hard. The world has a funny way in how it masks opportunity (perhaps even the greatest opportunities we will ever have) with this thing we call adversity. When things are easy, mundane, ordinary, the chances of you being seen, heard and appreciated are rather slim. However, when there is crisis (adversity), this is your greatest opportunity to be seen, noticed, heard and yes appreciated. Adversity = Opportunity! People who consistently navigate through these challenging situations with grace, poise, positivity, seeking only serve, uplift and inspire others around them are those who become future leaders.

So, make this mental commitment to yourself, be ready for and welcome adversity. Be grateful for it. If you can shift your mindset thereby elevating your words, actions, demeanor (attitude), the chances of you being seen and noticed are far greater.

Someone has the be the adult in the room... why not you? Why not always you?

2. Share Your Behavioral Weakness with Your Entire Team and Give Them Your Permission to Keep You Accountable to Being Better

If you have the courage to truly be vulnerable by openly, publicly, sharing a known weakness in your behavior with your team and then asking for them to keep you accountable toward its cessation, the magic that happens after this powerful moment is nothing short of miraculous! This brings out the very best in everyone... not just yourself.

3. Don't Match Negative Energy Received with Negativity. Always Be the Person in The Room Who Shifts the Energy Toward the Positive

The natural human reaction to receiving heated criticism, accusation or blame is to respond from a feeling of victimization, hurt or pain within us. That response typically matches the energy received. A person who will be more noticed, heard and appreciated however, practices immediately shifting the energy... responding with a calm, servant hearted intentions.

Always be the person shifting negative energy toward calm, positive energy. An extraordinary commitment to serve no matter the circumstance takes supreme internal strength. This my friends is true leadership!

4. Listen FOR Rather Than Listen To

Practice listening for how we can serve... regardless of who it is coming from. Listen for how we can serve the person speaking, the problem, the team, the company and the journey toward a positive solution. If we truly practice service in our listening rather than judging, what you will quickly discover is we ask better questions, provide better insights and more often, deliver better outcomes.

5 Look for Someone, Anyone Doing Good

Take a few minutes every day to walk around while looking for "good". What we focus our mind toward is that which we will see. Focus your mind toward good. Walk. Observe someone opening a door for someone else. Someone speaking highly of another. Someone doing something thoughtful. Someone staying later or coming in earlier to help the team. Tell all those people how much you noticed and appreciate them. If you do this every day, the cumulative effect of your kindness will be felt and noticed by all.

6. Intentionally Seek to Understand Deeper Value of People

Imagine knowing what everyone (whom you work for, with or lead) really really cares about? Simply ask everyone this question of everyone, "besides work, tell me what you really really care about?" Listen to what they say, keep digging, ask more about what they are sharing. Ask why.

When we know what people really care about, we know how to touch their lives in the most meaningful ways for THEM. Show them that you listened, you care. Do something thoughtful for them. Trust me, the shift in your relationship with your boss, your peer, your people will be felt, noticed and appreciated.

7. Instead Of Asking What Someone Thinks, Ask How They Feel

Try it. Ask how someone feels about something instead of asking what they think... then, be aware... more than 50% of people will still give you a thought-based response. Take this opportunity to say this, "respectfully, I didn't ask for your thoughts, your feelings matter to me, I'm genuinely interested in knowing how you feel."

Simply observe an immediate shift in your relationship with that person. They are probably saying to themselves, "wow, you really do care!" Talk about being more noticed and appreciated!

....

We think advancement is just about working hard and delivering results but my friends I have news for you... hard work and results is expected! While it is probably a good idea for you continue doing this, I would also encourage you to go above and beyond... to be and do what is not expected. Be a servant hearted human being. If you can be this person every day, practice these 7 things every day... not only will you be seen, noticed, heard and appreciated but, advancement and better outcomes will simply find you!

Yes!!!! I just read this after my daily God walk. I stop to connect with my creator and ask him to show me the way through life’s trials. It’s funny, when you embrace adversity you start to enjoy the journey, you become more present because the process strengthens you. Cheers to resilience and living with faith over fear.

Great insights. #1 hit home. I attended a personal development event by Michael Bernoff called HIT. We did an exercise that created a timeline of our life and it reveals the patterns. I saw that every major setback, period of adversity in my life was followed by a significant jump. That has helped me in this current period of adversity to know that something even greater is on the other side. the adversity is preparing me.
