7 Reasons Why Your Career Has Stalled - What You Can Do About It!

Transform behaviors and capabilities of people, to activate their brilliance so they can create positive impact and deliver amazing results
If you feel like your career has stalled, you’re not alone.
In my role as a career success coach, I encounter people just like you every day. They feel like they’re spinning their wheels, feeling unappreciated and stuck in ruts they don’t know how to escape. They’ve done everything they’ve supposed to do, and yet they hear an inner voice telling them that something’s not right. I bet this sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
The realization that your career has stalled is a gift. It’s evidence of a growing awareness. And the frustration you feel is the engine that will drive you toward a more dynamic, purposeful existence. I want to help you transcend your current frustration and help you align your essence with your career.
But first, I think it’s important to take a look at how you got here.
How Did You End Up in a Stalled Career?
As a coach, I work with people like you every day. And I see why careers become stalled. I want to share with you some of the more common reasons why talented, thoughtful and driven professionals become so disenchanted and disengaged.
#1 — You’ve Ignored Your Intuition: That feeling you have in your gut, that inner voice that’s been trying to get your attention — they are the manifestations of your intuition. If your career has stalled, it’s largely because you’ve been ignoring them.
The Solution: Listen to what your intuition is telling you, and allow it to be your co pilot as you navigate out of your stalled career!
#2 — You’ve Been Working with a Rigid Mindset: A rigid, fixed mindset does not allow for movement, dynamism and the type of inner transformation that’s required for you to escape your rut.
The Solution: Developing a growth mindset gives you the ability to entertain new perspectives, try new approaches and align your true self with your career.
#3 — You’ve Failed to Visualize: If you want to transform your life and career, it’s critical that you focus on the spark of awareness that’s been speaking to you through your intuition. But without a vision of your ideal existence, you will only continue to spin your wheels.
The Solution: Visualization gives you clarity around your goals and aspirations, and it keeps your objectives at top of mind. It also helps you connect your desires with the feelings of achieving them, making it much more likely that you will follow through with the necessary action.
#4 — Your Heart and Head Are out of Alignment: As a successful professional, you’ve probably achieved quite a bit by applying logic and intelligence to your work. People are often programmed to think through problems and work through issues systematically, as if they are merely robots whose worth is determined by the ability to reason and rationalize. But the fact is that we are human beings with hearts, souls and feelings.
The Solution: The key is to align the heart and head. The head will help you solve problems and complete tasks, but the heart will inspire you with purpose and passion. You absolutely need both!
#5 — You’ve Allowed Fear to Control Your Actions: This one is huge. Fear has a useful purpose, but the effect is often disproportionate to the actual threat that’s being faced. In your life and career, you are probably not encountering immediate threats to your survival, but you’re allowing fear to convince you that making bold decisions is hazardous.
The Solution: Understand that your fear is not an indicator of danger; instead, it can be seen as an indicator of the potential reward for making a transcendent choice. Change almost always comes with fear — don’t let it stop you from doing what you know is right.
#6 — You Didn’t Know You Could Change Your Story: Our brains organize thoughts and experiences into stories. Narratives help us understand our lives and relationships, and they help us make sense of the world. Unfortunately, they can be so powerful and persuasive that they make people feel like they can’t change them. They create ruts in people’s minds, not unlike the ruts careers fall into.
The Solution: If you want to transform your stalled career, it’s crucial that you assert yourself as the author of your own story. Past experiences and tendencies don’t have to be repeated. There is no penalty for changing your personal narrative, and there is no punishment for failing to honor “the way it has always been.” You are in charge of telling your own story, and the narrative possibilities are limitless!
#7 — You Haven’t Sought Help: Making significant changes to your career is not easy to do by yourself. It’s possible that you’ve aligned with your intuition, tamed your fears, visualized your ideal future and taken control of your story — but you’re still stuck in a stalled career.
The Solution: You can’t do it alone. Speak your truth to the people who are close to you. Your friends, family, mentors and other supporters can provide motivation, support and a safety net. But if you truly want to expand your awareness, achieve intentional shifts, gain clarity on your vision of success, develop your personal brand and grow into the next phase of your career, you require a coach.
