I’ve been singing the praises of marketing/business coaches for as long as I’ve been in business myself. They have a direct impact on your personal development as well as your business growth.
Of course, I’ll call out my bias straight up. I’ve always had a marketing business coach in my life, and I am one. Every good coach has a coach.
But besides me saying it’s a good idea, here are 7 other reasons why every serious business owner needs a marketing business coach.
It’s obvious, right? You’re in business, continually learning, like every single day, and until you know something, you don’t know it? It’s counterintuitive!
And this is precisely why you need someone who’s walked the walk before you, who has failed twice and got back up three times, someone who knows exactly what it will take to take your business from where it is TODAY, it’s current state, to its desired state – the place you are trying to take your business every day when you show up with hopes, dreams and goals.
Do you know what lives in the GAP between your CURRENT STATE and your DESIRED STATE in business? It’s MARKETING. The gap between where you are today and where you want to get to, is what we call the marketing gap and frankly businesses either live or die in the gap – depending on their ability to market what it is that they sell.
Having a marketing business coach, of course, ensures you live!
2. You know the “spray and pray” strategy doesn’t work
You’ve been in business long enough, hopefully, to know that the “spray and pray” marketing strategy doesn’t work. Telling everyone everything you do, throwing spaghetti (aka offers) against the wall and seeing what sticks, just isn’t getting you the leads, returns, business and repeat business that you need.
Having a marketing strategy that is aligned with your business goals, which ensures every piece of marketing you put out into the world is crafted with your business goals in mind, is what works.
Go back over your last months worth of marketing content, how much of it is aligned with your business goals? Be honest, only you will know.
3. What you’ve been doing has got you this far, but you’re smart enough to know it won’t get you to the next level – something has to change.
As business owners we are extremely resourceful – we’ve had enough knowledge and power to get us to where we are today, but where you are today isn’t probably where you want to be and you know you need to stretch your thinking, up your marketing game and be more strategic to get to the next level.
It really doesn’t matter what the “next level” is for you because you know the knowledge and resources you have today, just won’t be enough, or at least not enough if you want to get their faster, with more profit and less grey hair.
Again, having someone who’s “been there, done that”, has walked the walk and talked the talk, who is willing to share everything they know to help you and your business, is truly invaluable and frankly, priceless.
4. Your competitors have a business coach.
We know we shouldn’t watch what are competitors are doing, but a good dose of competitive analysis can sometimes be the kick we need to look at our own business and how it’s serving us.
If your competitor has a business coach, a great business coach, then they are, sorry to say, going to keep being that “sword in your side”, seemingly getting what you want quicker, easier, and more with oodles of profit, because they have help. They have that someone who’s showing them the easier path, the simpler way, showing them where the pitfalls are and guiding them through the path less travelled.
If you have a competitor who just really makes you think “how do they … how are they ….” – then take a sneaky look into their business and I’ll almost promise you, you’ll find they have help (a marketing business coach).
5. It’s time to get serious
My second business, my retail store, I bought for FUN – so I know what it’s like to have fun in business and not take it too seriously – basically it’s a job, you love it, and it pays okay. But just like me, perhaps you know when it’s time to get serious.
I remember distinctly having that thought of “oh, we could actually make this into a REAL business – we’re pretty good at this”, and so that day I became a real business owner who took data, finances and marketing seriously to grow my business 11,987% in just 7 years. (PS – it was still fun though!).
So, perhaps it’s now your turn. It’s time to take your business seriously. It’s time to make decisions based on data, not what you “think” is happening. It’s time to make decisions based on strategy and goals, rather than based on how much time you have left in the day after working in the business – it’s time to work on it.
It’s time to see how good you really are at what you do – take your business “out for a spin”.
It’s time to be the expert you are and step up.? One of my mentors told me years ago, “Jenn, if you don’t share what you know about marketing and small business with the world, then you’re just being selfish ...” [ouch]
Get unselfish … it’s time.
6. Accountability is a dirty word
We all have a to-do list (written, verbal or stored in our head) as long as our arm and yet there’s never enough time in the day to get done what you need to have done. Enter accountability! There’s nothing quite like having an accountability appointment in your calendar with your coach staring at you and knowing you haven’t done the work [yet].
If you want to get sh*t done, then having a marketing business coach that offers you accountability as well, is key. It makes you into a mover and shaker without trying, because there is no way in hell you are turning up to that accountability appointment having not done what it is that you said you would.
Accountability is the driver of progress when it comes to being a small, busy, business owner.
7. You need an unbiased opinion
The last thing you need in business is to surround yourself with “yes” people. Do you think this is a good idea? YES! Do you think I should do this? YES! Yes people, often family, friends, employees have a bias. They don’t want to hurt your feelings, or they have no idea what it takes to succeed in business, or they have a financial interest in keeping on your “good side” [not wanting to insult you or make you feel bad].
But a good marketing business coach, they care, but they care that the activities you are doing are the RIGHT activities and the ones that will help you reach your goals, make you more profitable, and are the ones you are an expert at – rather than something you should be outsourcing.
A marketing business coach worth their price tag will tell you when you’re out of alignment, when what you are proposing won’t work or shouldn’t be done that way or when that idea is just not a good one. But they’ll also celebrate with you, cheer you on and be your biggest advocate.
We have all asked the wrong person’s opinion in business before, asked the person who will give us the answer we are looking for, rather than the one we need, regardless of the consequences.
Need an unbiased and yet qualified opinion, ask your marketing business coach.
I'm not exaggerating when I say my coach helped me through some of the most turbulent times in my business or that I would not be where I am today if it hadn't been for their guidance and influence. I want you to experience the same. If you're a serious business owner, you need a marketing business coach; it really is that simple.
