7 Qualities of the Most Successful Digital Marketing Companies in the World Today

Few companies truly excel when it comes to digital marketing.

In fact, most fail to get the results they seek.

So what’s the divide?

What’s the difference between the ones that somehow go big, versus the ones that never truly do anything extraordinary to stand out in their space?

Well after owning an agency for over seven years (with many clients succeeding and failing), and with over 5,000 emails from readers and audience members telling me about their business failures and triumphs, I have some strong opinions on this.

Keep in mind though, this list is based on data—historical evidence. Sure, there will always be exceptions to the following, but this aggregate is focused on the majority, not the outliers.

Here goes…

7 Qualities of the Most Successful Digital Marketing Companies in the World

1. The marketing department is given the same degree of attention and focus from leadership as the sales team. In fact, most often the actual CEO is keenly interested and engaged with marketing initiatives. (Why? Because leadership understands that marketing, based on all of today’s buyer trends, has a greater influence on the actual sale than the sales team does.)

2. The marketing department is responsible for revenue KPIs and revenue attribution, and has the necessary tools to achieve this. (With great power comes great responsibility.)

3. The sales department works hand-in-hand with marketing. (In fact, most sales meetings and trainings include at least one person from marketing in the room, and sales has a MAJOR influence on the content being created by the marketing department.)

4. The sales department understands the value of great “content.” (And therefore not only helps plan and produce said content, but also looks to integrate it into every facet of the sales process-- i.e. "Assignment Selling")

5. The company doesn’t base their decisions on what the competition is or is not doing. Rather, the only thing they really care about is the buyer. The buyer dictates their direction. The buyer dictates what they do and do not talk about. The buyer dictates what they sell. The rest is irrelevant.

6. The marketing department produces the majority of their own content. They have in-house writers, videographers, etc. In fact, the majority produce well over 100 new pieces of content (articles, videos, etc.) a year on their website. (Show me a world class digital marketing case study of a business that outsourced all their content to an agency and became the thought-leader of their space. I’ve yet to find one.)

7. The company doesn’t allow “perfection” to hinder their digital marketing progress. They’d rather accept there will be flaws and bumps along the way than to sit idly by, waiting for the perfect plan and flawless execution.

So there you have it friends.

That's the pattern.

What say you? Agree or Disagree? Any you'd add to the list?

I love #7! Too many times people delay, waiting for the "perfect" content, video, wording, etc... and never get it done or 10 others beat them to it. Get your facts, be yourself, and say what you mean. That's good enough.

I agree because we are doing everything that you stated here. Not because we are marketing geniuses, but because this is where our customers brought us.
