7 Networking Mistakes You Didn’t Realize You Were Making

We all know networking is important, but what if you’re making small mistakes that are holding you back—without even realizing it? Here are seven common networking missteps and how to fix them.
1. Neglecting Your LinkedIn Profile
Your LinkedIn profile isn’t a one-and-done project. If you haven’t updated it in the past six months, you might be leaving outdated information out there—or worse, missing opportunities.
Fix it: Every few months, refresh your profile photo, update your experience, and add new achievements. A strong, current profile makes it easier for the right people to find and connect with you.
2. Keeping Your Contacts to Yourself
One of the fastest ways to grow your network is by introducing people to each other. Yet, many people forget to do this or hesitate out of fear that it won’t benefit them directly.
Fix it: If two people in your network could benefit from knowing each other, make the introduction (with their permission). Not only does this strengthen their networks, but it also positions you as a valuable connector.
3. Not Having a Business Card (Yes, Even Now!)
You might think business cards are old-school, but they still matter. You never know when a quick exchange will lead to a big opportunity.
Fix it: Have both a physical and a digital business card. If nothing else, use an app like HiHello to make sharing your contact details effortless.
4. Thinking Networking = Meeting New People Only
It’s easy to get caught up in meeting new people while overlooking the connections you already have.
Fix it: Instead of chasing new contacts, take time to nurture your existing network. Reach out, check in, and offer value to the people already in your circle. They might be the ones who open the right doors for you.
5. Not Following Up
You had a great conversation, exchanged information, and then... nothing. Networking isn’t just about making connections—it’s about maintaining them.
Fix it: Send a quick follow-up message within 48 hours of meeting someone. Even a simple “Great meeting you! Let’s stay in touch” keeps the relationship warm.

6. Only Talking About Yourself
Networking is a two-way street. If your conversations revolve around your own goals, you might be missing out on deeper, more meaningful connections.
Fix it: Instead of just answering questions, ask thoughtful ones like:
7. Not Showing Up Consistently
Networking isn’t just for when you need a job or a favor. Building strong relationships takes time and consistency.
Fix it: Make networking a habit. Attend industry events, engage on LinkedIn, and reach out to contacts regularly—not just when you need something.
The bottom line... networking is about relationships
Networking isn’t a checklist—it’s an ongoing process. Avoid these mistakes, and you’ll not only grow your network but also build genuine, lasting connections.
