As HR professionals, we often encounter misconceptions about the value and role we bring to organisations. It's time to set the record straight! Here are some common myths about HR and how we can debunk them:
1?? "HR is only for hiring and firing." Debunk: HR is so much more! We're involved in employee relations, leadership development, compliance, culture-building, and aligning the workforce with the company’s vision. Recruitment and terminations are just the tip of the iceberg.
2?? "HR is the employee advocate." Debunk: Our role is to balance the needs of employees and the business. While we foster a positive work environment, we ultimately ensure policies are fair, compliant, and aligned with company goals.
3?? "HR only deals with problems." Debunk: We’re not just problem-solvers—we’re culture architects! HR focuses on building engagement, leadership development, and preparing the workforce for future success.
4?? "Anyone can do HR." Debunk: HR requires specialised knowledge of labour laws, conflict resolution, organisational development, and more. It’s a dynamic field that demands continuous learning to stay ahead.

5?? "HR is responsible for employee happiness." Debunk: While we create policies and programs that foster engagement, satisfaction is a shared responsibility across departments. HR works with leadership to ensure a holistic approach to well-being.
6?? "HR should report to Finance." Debunk: HR and Finance have unique but complementary roles. If HR reports to Finance, decisions could be driven by numbers rather than people. HR needs its autonomy to prioritise employee well-being and ensure sustainable growth.
7?? "HR is a party planner." Debunk: Sure, we organise events ( which I detest)—but we’re also strategists, talent developers, and culture shapers. Events are just one small piece of a bigger picture that involves aligning people with business goals.
HR is more than just policies and paperwork—we’re a key driver of organisational success!

6 个月I agree Wendy-Ann Sloan This is so true. HR does so much more than ensuring someone gets hired or fired (or paid). There are so many misconceptions one has of other fields and sometimes it is necessary to 'step into' the other's shoes to see what it really takes.
