7 Lessons I Learned From A Guy Who Spends $800,000 Per Month On Ads

7 Lessons I Learned From A Guy Who Spends $800,000 Per Month On Ads

Most people never launch a single profitable advertising campaign. But Jeremy Wadell is different.

He’s spent millions of dollars profitably and developed hundreds of successful campaigns.

Fact: You don’t get that kind of success without having a few tricks up your sleeve.

That's why I brought Jeremy on as the first guest for my new podcast, Kings of Conversion, and asked him to share his biggest advertising secrets.

In the interview, we talked about the biggest advertising mistakes he sees people making, how to find hot products and quickly scales them on Facebook, how to test new product ideas for less than $500, and so much more.

Jeremy and I used to work together and talked all the time. And still, this was the first time I’d heard many of the ideas we discussed on the show.

I think you’ll love the whole thing, but here are a few of the highlights and lessons I learned:

1. FACEBOOK PUNISHES ADVERTISERS WHO DON'T INSPIRE & UPLIFT.

Jeremy says a huge mistake advertisers make is they focus their ads on the problems people have. For example, they’ll write ads that say, “Are you tired of not fitting in your jeans? I have the solution …” These ads work okay but the problem is, when every advertiser takes the same approach, users feel bad and, more importantly, they aren’t inclined to come back to the ad platform. Facebook doesn’t like that just as much as the people don’t and they punish advertisers accordingly. Instead, Jeremy has learned to create ads that make people feel amazing. He asks: “What does the amazing experience look like? What are people going to share?” He creates inspiring and uplifting ads. This results in users having a better experience and him not even paying for half the traffic he gets. How? Because people are tagging their friends in the comments, saying how much they love his ads. Imagine a world where you’re trying to make it work by paying click by click and he’s getting 85 clicks for free.

2. MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO LOSE BY CHOOSING MARKETS WISELY.

One of the secrets to Jeremy’s success as an advertiser is that he spends an insane amount of time choosing the perfect markets to enter. He wants to know his potential customers' pains, frustrations and deepest desires down to the smallest detail possible so he can keep selling them stuff again and again — for life. Most advertisers, he says, do not do this. They just jump on a hot product thinking ONE product is the key to success. But he’s learned the real profit is being INSANELY selective with who you serve. So that when you choose, the cards are stacked so heavily in your favor that you cannot lose. For him, he’s mastered what it takes to sell to upper-middle-class women 45 and older. He knows the kinds of products they use and want. You don’t have to choose the same audience (although Jeremy believes you should if you’re marketing on Facebook), but you do have to choose ONE audience and go insanely deep with them rather than succumbing to “shiny object syndrome” by chasing new markets all the time.

3. THE BEST PRODUCTS ARE THEIR OWN INFOMERCIAL.

All of Jeremy’s top-selling products are instantly eye-catching and sell themselves — much like an infomercial. He didn’t reveal a specific product he sells but he did give a great example: The Wand by Purewine. It’s a device that takes the tannins out of wine. So if you don’t like tannins or want to avoid hangovers, just dunk it in your wine and wallah. It solves a problem but, more importantly, the product is visual. When someone takes this out at bar or house party, everyone wants to know: What is that? That’s the kind of thing that makes sure you don’t just sell to one person. But you sell to all their friends, too.

4. BORING BUSINESSES CAN BE INSANELY PROFITABLE.

Jeremy’s biggest business aren’t sexy, trendy products. They’re things like washers, which don’t even run on social media. They’re Google shopping stores and keyword based. To me this proves, you don’t have to chase trendy business or wild product ideas to succeed online. In fact, boring products are sometimes the best industries.

5. TRANSLATE YOUR ADS.

Jeremy says, “If you’re struggling to make it right now in the U.S., translate your ads. The U.S. is the toughest market on earth. If you can’t make it here, go somewhere else first. Get good and then come back.”

6. ALWAYS BE ABLE TO OUTSPEND YOUR COMPETITION.

The goal of advertising isn’t to get the cheapest leads possible. It’s to be able to pay more to acquire a customer than ALL your competitors can. This is how you dominate markets and never have to worry about competition. Why? It’s simple — if you can outspend your competitors, you win. And yet, this is the complete opposite of the way many advertisers think. Flip your thinking and you’ll go MUCH further with your ads.

7. TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE GOLD.

The biggest advertising secret has nothing to do with ads. Yet so many advertisers never learn this. They think the goal of their ads is to get someone to click and buy right away. Jeremy has learned to take a much more holistic approach. In other words, he’d rather have 1 great customer who sticks around and feels great about their purchase than 10 people that get high-pressure sold into buying something (and will likely refund). This takes patience to get right. But once you nail it, it can completely change the game.
