7 great signs Ready Player One will break records!

I live in a southern city, Jacksonville Beach FL where we aren't really known for film and game development and definitely not Virtual reality development. If there's a VR related event here it's usually because I've thrown it and 9 times out of ten just my mom shows up. I have been in VR development for over 5 years and was pumped to see Ready Player One opening night, but my girlfriend wanted to see it with me so I waited for her to see it Friday. Being in the industry I was nervous, it kinda felt as if I was one of the creators a very strange feeling heading to go see it. We pulled into the parking lot of a Regal cinema right here on Beach Blvd and the parking lot was packed! The 1?? great sign. I was in line and the gentlemen in front of me in his early 60's and was asking the ticket lady about the film. She said great things, that it was about gaming and looked so amazing and that she saw it the other night and loved it that was great sign # 2. I, of course, being a self-proclaimed evangelist for VR and Steven Spielberg one of my favorite storytellers butted right in to close that sale, letting the gentlemen know I read the book and Steven Spielberg was the director of the movie and its going to be awesome, but of course, I was still nervous for it.

My girlfriend and I handed over our tickets to the usher and he smiles and says right here, it was there first and best room in the theater, great sign #3. We sit down and the theater was already getting full by the time the credits started it was a packed house great sign #4. I was gitty, my girlfriend grabs my hand and held it tight as if I made the movie myself. She wanted this to be great for me she knows how hard VR developers work and just wants this technology to succeed for all of us. Once the movie started, it was a roller coaster of fun. King Kong, TRex, Chucky, Halo Spartans the movie was packed with amazing scenes and characters. It had all the action and suspense of Jurrasic Park, the powerful story of ET with the beautiful visuals of AI along with the action scenes of Saving Private Ryan but kid-friendly. No one in that movie theater wanted it to end and when it did for the first time I experienced in a local theater, people stood up and cheered, I was stunned. That was great sign #5. I left that theater feeling amazing. We walk outside and I look at my girlfriend and we both said wow that was cool. But what was even cooler; people were gathering outside in groups talking about the movie that was great sign #6. I stuck around to eavesdrop on what they were saying and even joined in some of the conversations like a creep. Some were comparing it to the book, others were saying they didn't know what it was going to be like and were blown away. The general consense was the film was an absolute HIT! Spielberg nailed it and brought Ernest clines book to life in a fantastical way. So go see the movie and if you go see it and somehow find this little article and comment on this post that will be great sign #7!

Absolutely agree! While the theater wasn't packed when we went (Wednesday evening) because two (or three?) rows of the theater are DBOX seats, the rest of the theater was packed and there was a lot of excited conversation in the gallery afterward. The only thing I found strange is that no one clapped and cheered at the end of the movie. My son and I let out a little clap, and my son exclaimed "THAT WAS SOOOOOO AWESOME!" really loud ... but nothing from the other moviegoers. POSSIBLE SPOILERS (but found in trailers): Are you and your girlfriend gamers? I'm assuming you are because of your background, but if your girlfriend is not, I'd love to hear her POV about all of this. I ask because I am not (my son is, of course), and I left the theater with questions about the way some of the game portions were portrayed in the movie. Example that my son actually pointed out: "How can they run through the streets with their VR gear on? Why does Wade need to be rigged up and not the random people on the street? Will we do that [run the streets] in the future?" I'm assuming what we were seeing is more of a mixed reality situation so the Gunters could run in the real world without bumping into people and objects, correct? If yes, then is that the future of VR? Is it immersive if you have a heads up or MR display? I also have some questions about avatars, in general. Will we have two (or more) versions of ourselves in VR? Will we have a professional avatar that resembles us and then have a more creative version of ourselves for social and game play? I would love if you could host an event here in JAX that addresses some of this. (I have a ridiculous amount of hypotheticals and would enjoy philosophizing about our near future.)
