This Wednesday, August 26th, is Women's Equality Day! In 1971, Congress officially recognized Women’s Equality Day which highlights the continued efforts of women to achieve full equality. It has officially been 100 years since the 19th Amendment was ratified, granting women the right to vote in elections throughout the country.
From the invention of fire escapes, the windshield wiper, and kevlar, women have been at the forefront of progress. But gender equality has not yet been reached. It is reported females are 47% more likely to suffer severe injuries in car crashes because safety features are designed for men. American women earn less than men, on average, in all industries. Female-dominated occupations, such as childcare, continue to occupy the lower rungs of the U.S. wage ladder. Women make up 63 percent of workers earning the federal minimum wage. By contrast, women represent only 5 percent of CEOs at Fortune 500 firms
At the current rate of progress, it will take another 108 years to reach gender parity, according to the World Economic Forum’s most recent Global Gender Gap report. There has been progress over the last decade. More females are serving in positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality. Despite these gains, many challenges remain. Discriminatory laws and social norms remain pervasive, females continue to be underrepresented, income gaps still remain, and 1 in 5 women report experiencing domestic violence.
Let’s celebrate the celebration of women!
