7 Foods High In Selenium To Boost Thyroid Function

Let’s talk Selenium!

Selenium is a mineral found in various foods and it plays a key role in many different basic functions of the body as is listed below:

  • Aids in making DNA
  • Helps protect against cell damage and infections
  • Involved in reproduction
  • Involved in the metabolism of thyroid hormones

The recommended intake of selenium per day is around 55 micrograms. When too little is consumed it could cause a form of cardiomyopathy or a form of osteoarthritis. When too much selenium is consumed muscle tremors, heart attacks or kidney failure might occur. Therefore it is important to consume just the right amount.

Here are 7 foods that are high in Selenium:

  1. Seafood
  2. Organ meats – liver, kidneys etc.
  3. Brazil nuts
  4. Beef
  5. Chicken
  6. Beans & Lentils
  7. Whole wheat breads
