7 Essential Ways to Improve Body Language

7 Essential Ways to Improve Body Language

Sometimes how you behave matters more than what you say.

Check out seven ways to use your body language to your advantage.

Have you ever noticed and judged someone on their body language? Yes! All of us have done the same. Emotional people flourish their arms more than other people and have fewer communicational problems compared to others.

In the beginning to change your body language you should be well aware of your body language. See the way you sit, use your hands and legs, how you stand, and the way your body moves while talking to someone.

The most common way to learn and practice is to do it in front of a mirror, when you might do it for the first few times you will feel shy and also silly but this will give you proper feedback on how you look to others as a person.

Another tip is to close your eyes and visualize the way you talk, stand, sit, your confidence level, and then you need to imagine the personality you want to present like open, relaxed or whatever you want to communicate. See yourself move like that version of yourself, then try it out.

At Epinomi Consulting, we give a lot of importance to the training and grooming our personality.

1.???When the going gets tough, start smiling.

When you enter a new phase of life you will go through tough times, but a smile on your face can change it all. Positive and negative expressions matter as a signal is sent to your brain that whatever you are doing is difficult or can be overcome. That causes your brain to send cortisol into your bloodstream, which raises your stress levels, which lands you up as a hot mess.

?Frowning, grimacing, glowering, and other negative facial expressions can show disinterest to the person in front, and will give a bad impression of yours.

Instead, make a habit to smile. It works.

When you smile it automatically lightens up the atmosphere, that helps other people feel less stressed. So, if you smile, others will also smile, if you feel motivated, they will also feel motivated and if you frown, soon others will also be frowning too.

2.???Use your hands more confidently.

Proper use of your hands is very important, instead of fidgeting with your hands, folding or scratching your face use them to direct while communication according to what you are trying to say.

But don’t use them all the time or too much, use them time to time whenever needed, too much use of hands can be distracting and don’t let your hands flail around, use them with some control.

3.???Think before you speak.

“Think before you speak, your words could hurt someone’s feelings more than you intended them to.”

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????-Justin Bieber.

Eye contact is important, but it is quite difficult to maintain eye contact when you have to think. Most of us while talking, look up or down or away and then swing back when we've gathered our thoughts.

Here's a better way. If you have to look away to think, take a pause and do it before you answer. While taking a pause, look thoughtful, glance away, and then return to making eye contact when you start speaking.

Then your words are even more powerful because your eyes support them and makes you look confident.

4.???Read the room

An important key to utilizing body language to your benefit is reading your audience or reading the room. Gauging the room allows you to understand the temperament and pace of your audience.

Mirroring your handshake and speaking speed to that of the person you’re meeting with will allow them to feel as though they’re talking with an equal, which in turn makes them more likely to agree with you.

5.???Keep an Eye Contact

To show that you are interested in a conversation, you have to look in your dialogue partner’s eyes. If you are looking sideways, on the wall or in the air, it is obvious that you are not interested and thinking about other things. To demonstrate your involvement in the dialogue, try nodding as well. It is pretty weird and quite difficult to talk to a person whose facial expression is blank or still. To avoid uncomfortable situations, consider keeping eye contact, which doesn’t mean you need to stare! and nodding – this will create an impression that you are fully involved in the conversation and enjoy it.

6.???Do Not Cross Your Arms or Legs

To show that you are open to people, you need to open literally and not close with the help of arms and legs. By crossing your arms and legs subconsciously, you are closing yourself from both the people and upcoming information, as it looks very rude and defensive – try to control this gesture, and you will soon see the positive results. People would be attracted to you, and you would memorize the information better and faster.

7.???Do Not Keep Your Head Down

Do not keep your head too high as people will think you are arrogant, but do not keep it too down. This will signify you are shy and reserved and will thus frighten the potential dialogue partner. Keeping your head down creates the impression you are feeling guilty and discourages having a conversation with you because you have no idea how to get eye contact with you (sign of disinterest). What you need is to keep your head straight in front of your dialogue partner’s eyes: not too high, not too down.

Some of these tips might seem like you are faking or something too simple. But fake it till you make it is a useful way to learn something new. And remember, feelings work backward too. If you would like us to host a training any of the skills above do write to us on @epinomiconsulting.
