7 Emerging Trends In Healthcare – This And More News In Digital Health This Week

I love my job. Clearly, it gets to be quite exhausting at times but identifying, analysing and forecasting digital health trends in the big picture has always given me the kick.
And that is what I and my team have been doing heavily over the past weeks. Digital trends in healthcare can get elusive for they are often hard to achieve and even harder to keep (remember robots in hospitals?). But to create something like a digital health hype cycle , or collecting the Top 100 digital health companies are massive undertakings to do responsibly. And I love such a challenge.
In this newsletter, I want to show you 7 digital health trends that'll emerge exponentially in my views. Challenge me!
More In This Newsletter: CrossFit to launch fully digital primary care service; Google is still 'all-in' on healthcare; Robot café hires people with disabilities to operate robo-waiters in Japan; The secret to South Korea's covid success is combining high technology with the human touch – check out this week’s newsletter below.

Fitness company CrossFit announced earlier this month that it was launching a new primary care service aimed at providing an individualized approach to health. The company says it will also offer personalized, precision health and preventive medicine in addition to virtual primary care. The company touts its ability to offer an array of "extensive testing," as well as the option to track health metrics in one place and to receive a "fully comprehensive health plan."
Last week I was musing about which other non-healthcare company will be the next to begin providing healthcare services. I have the feeling that businesses see the financial potential in healthcare and they all want to have a slice of the cake. But medicine is much more difficult than that.
Alphabet’s Google is “still all-in on health,” according to its chief health officer, despite the demise of its recent attempt at a formalized business unit for the healthcare sector. The tech giant founded Google Health in 2018 and at one point grew it to 500 employees, but dissolved the unit in August. The department was established to head the tech company’s health strategy but Google faced backlash in recent years over the intersection of Google, AI and health data.
News of the dissolution of Google Health came on exact the same day we posted our article on this particular Tech Giant back in August. We concluded that "we can expect the tech giant to keep branching out in various areas of healthcare as it aims to have a strong foothold on the market." And indeed it does.

Some people with disabilities need jobs to survive, but even those who don’t can benefit from the social interaction and self-esteem boost afforded by employment. At the Dawn Avatar Robot Café, in Tokyo, diners are served by robot waiters, but these bots aren’t AIs — they’re avatars, controlled by employees with disabilities working remotely.
What an interesting and nice concept in Japan to connect people working with disabilities to jobs they couldn't do without the help of technology.
The South Korean experience reveals just how effective locally delivered and individually tailored self-isolation systems can be. To combat COVID and future pandemics, governments need to heed the lessons of these social interventions and not just the technological ones. South Korea teaches us that high-tech solutions can help protect against disease, but these work together with social interventions.
South Korea, one of the world’s most densely populated large countries, has avoided full lockdowns and border closures while keeping cumulative confirmed COVID cases relatively low. This report explains how they have been able to do that.
