The 7 Different Types of Plastic
Plastic comes in many forms, each with its own uses and effects on the environment. Some plastics can be reused or recycled, while others can't. To help you understand the different types and their impact, we’ll go over the seven main types of plastic and their characteristics.
WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLASTIC?
In 1988, the Society of the Plastics Industry created a system called the Resin Identification Code (RIC). This system sorts plastics into 7 categories to make recycling easier. This system is now used worldwide.
THE DIFFERENT PLASTIC TYPES
1. PET
PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate. It's commonly used for food and drink containers because it keeps products fresh by blocking oxygen. PET is also widely recycled and is often picked up by curbside recycling programs.
2. HDPE
HDPE, or High-Density Polyethylene, is strong and used for items like grocery bags, milk jugs, and recycling bins. It’s durable, impact-resistant, and can handle high temperatures. HDPE is also widely accepted at recycling centres.
3. PVC
PVC, or Polyvinyl Chloride, comes in rigid and flexible forms. Rigid PVC is used in construction, while flexible PVC is used for plumbing and electrical cables. Although PVC has many uses, it's difficult to recycle and should be avoided if possible.
4. LDPE
LDPE, or Low-Density Polyethylene, is thinner and more flexible than HDPE. It's used in plastic bags, wraps, and some containers. LDPE is not usually recycled through curbside programs.

5. PP
Polypropylene is strong and can handle high temperatures. It’s used in items like tupperware, car parts, and yogurt containers. Polypropylene is known for its durability and flexibility.
6. PS
Polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, can be solid or foamed. It’s used in cups, packing materials, and disposable dishes. However, it’s not biodegradable, can be harmful to wildlife, and is not widely recycled.
7. OTHER PLASTIC
Plastics that don’t fit into the above categories fall into this group. This includes polycarbonates, which are used in things like sunglasses and CDs. These plastics can release harmful chemicals and are rarely recycled.
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
We hope this helps you understand the different types of plastic.
Remember to choose reusable options and recycle the plastics you can.
