So, why is a CIO/CDO making movies anyways? Let me share the story with you...

The furthest back that I can remember about making movies is something my father said when I was a teenager or before. He was sharing with someone that he wanted to make a short film, I think with a plot like "When A Stranger Calls." I think is when it clicked that movies aren't magically made someplace on another planet, that people like you and I could make movies.

This awareness was then carried along with me until it landed on my life to-do list. Not really a bucket list, just some things I will do during my life. 1) Sing a song. 2) Write a book. 3) Make a movie. You'll have to wait for other stories for 1 and 2, as this is all about making a movie.

Now, coming from Southern California, where movies are a bit of the local culture - everyone is in 'the business' even if they really are a waiter or whatever. This whole thing was a big turn off for me, as my life to-do list was never to make it big in the industry in California. However, I definitely wanted to make a movie, however I didn't have any idea how or what that really meant.

Around 2004 or 2005, I signed myself up for a Producers Masterclass in London. Went over for a few days, and attended Dov Simens' class. What I remember taking away from that (in addition to the book of scripts on the picture of this post), was that movie making is just like any other project I've been running in my corporate life. There are stakeholders, there are egos, there is content, there is delivery, there is creating and capturing value at the end of it all. I remember Mr. Simens telling me after the course that he thought of all the people in the class that I was the one he thought might be able to pull it off - because I was asking practical business questions and not artistic questions like what kind of film to use. (Yes, this was back when film was a thing).

As a kid, I learned that you don't have to be a magician. As an adult, I learned that making a movie as a Producer uses the same tricks that I had in my corporate toolbox.

It was a filmmaker friend confronting me with the challenge to 'poop or get off the pot' on making a movie that got me into action, and that is for the next post.

Follow the link above to learn how to support the project. You will see that for a $10 pledge you will get to see the new movie when it is released, so it's sort of a pre-sales ticket deal. Thanks!
