I wanted to put all my 7 Energy Tips in one place ...
Monday
Time clocks in your property can be one of the weak points of your energy management. My tip regarding your timeclocks would be to:
1.??Document all your timeclocks within your property because it is critical to keep the times set correctly and being aware of their status.
2.??Ensure the timeclocks are set correctly inline with the orgnisation’s operational times.
3.??Carry out monthly reviews to ensure the timeclocks have not been manually overridden
4.??Review you building to see whether there are other opportunities to install a timeclock to ensure heating, cooling or lighting is controlled to meet your operational needs.
5.??Make sure ‘Daylight Savings’ are adhered to and updated.
Lastly consider whether these timeclocks can be upgraded to a building management device, that can be managed remotely with remote monitoring.

‘We cannot manage what we don’t measure’. On a regular basis I am sharing these words regarding managing your energy. Do not forget that I always say…
Energy = Gas + Electricity + Water + Transport
Every month report on your consumptions for all of your utilities whether it be via your meter readings or from your bills. To assist you, I have built an ‘Excel Workbook’, which I am happy to send to you.
Data is critical but don’t just collect the figures, provide analysis and look at the trends and compare them with a business indicator like sales or widgets produced. This will indicate trends and more importantly it will present exceptions early. If you can look at historic billing, try to go back as far as you can relevant to your business status and operations.
Note: it doesn’t matter if you are a “corner shop or an office block’, this will help you.

Once a month, you and your team need to deliver your own mini energy assessment and identify whether the key areas are operating efficiently. In my opinion this would take just under one hour every month and it will create a good process on effective energy management. We have created a mini assessment report to tick off every month and log back with the ‘Energy Champion’ for the organisation.
Areas to focus on:
·??Plant Rooms
·??Timeclocks – check times are correct
·???Water Leaks from plant
·??Lagging condition
·??Dripping Taps
·??Window or Doors - Open
·??Rooms Heated / Cooled when not occupied
·??Set-points too high or too low in office areas
·??External lights on when daylight
·??Make sure all building plant is in auto
Recommended Route: External of the building, through entrance and then to the roof, plant rooms and office area/ production area / retail area.

Energy Billing Best Practice …From a single shop to a tower block and everything in between. Energy Billing Best Practice is a zero-cost management programme that could result in the region of a 10-15% saving on your gas, electricity and water bills each month.
Over the years I have proved this, and I have been engaged with many small and large businesses helping them to drive down their energy costs. I have seen huge savings as a result of businesses adhering to this programme and initiating the steps.
The below areas enable us to focus on billing and enable organisations to take control of their energy costs
a.?Correct contract – Make sure you have the correct contract in place for your utility.
b.?Ensure no estimation – Make sure there is no (E) on your billing
c.?Complete monthly meter reads and check them back against your bills
d.?Develop a ‘Sign off process’ on your billing, do not just sign off.
Friday
This day is a perfect day to stay back late. Stay back late and walk the building and ensure ALL NON ESSENTIAL plant, lighting and air-conditioning systems are turned off or put to a set-back.
Document and prepare a shutdown document for each department of your organisation and make everyone accountable for shutting their areas down every night.
Saturday
If you have been following my daily tips you would have been engaging in this process as an individual. My tip now is to start to engage with different teams in your organisation and build an energy team.
For me this is key and my recommended team would look like this:
·??Head of Cleaning
·??Head of Security
·??Head of Maintenance and Engineering
·??Operations
·???Accounts
Monthly meetings to review your reports created in Day 2?(Tuesday’s Tip). Review your mini assessment check list from Day 3 ( Wednesday’s Tip).
Create an agenda, accountability and initiatives.
Sunday
This is where we report the initiative and feed this back to the organisation. Energy Management initiatives need to be promoted. In my experience just announcing that your organisation is implementing an energy management program will deliver at least a 1% energy saving, as everyone will be focusing their minds towards saving. However, to develop momentum in driving down the building’s energy we must make the figures visible to everyone.
Share your reports and share the wins on your website, your intranet, newsletters and even on the notice boards around. Create excitement and maybe give the initiative a name that aligns your business. Throughout my career I have seen some great named initiatives.
