Boss vs Leader

Boss vs Leader

A leader can be a boss, but not every boss can be a leader. Here are some major points that separate bosses from leaders. Let's see the differences.

Leaders lead rather than rule.

Leads the team forward and moves together.

Leaders listen and speak rather than command.

Bosses give orders and need employees to listen and to obey. However, leaders always listen to opinions, they are ready for advising, discussion, and any feedback an employee has to offer.

Leaders motivate rather than terrify.

Bosses are more likely to intimidate into action while leaders will motivate to action. Instead of pointing out mistakes and putting all blame on employees, leaders coach people up and make them better. This is what I called "compassionate leadership".

Leaders teach and learn rather than expect and ignore.

Leaders always pay attention to their colleagues, knowing there is always more to learn from them. Leaders are not only takers but givers, as well.

Leaders take part rather than stay aside.

Bosses choose to stay aside in the job, whilst leaders take the initiative. Leaders choose to be a part of the team rather than bossing the team around.

Leaders reprimand rather than scold or shout.

Leaders never scold or shout at any individual, especially in public. Rather, they talk to the person individually and without any spike in temper.

Leaders establish equal relationships.

Leaders treat everyone equally and do not allow personal preferences to affect the team dynamic.

For me, leadership isn’t always measured by a title or a hierarchy. Whatever your position is, you can manifest true leadership in your own simple ways. Always remember that an effective leader is a good follower and a person who motivates and inspires people. Someone who listens and shows compassion to others, and has accountability in the workplace. Most of all, someone who is truly admired and respected inside and outside the office. Otherwise, that's bossing people around!

What's your take-away? I paused for a reply.
