#7 BREAKING THE BAMBOO CEILING: a song about Asian representation and inclusion

Welcome to Edition #7 of my newsletter where I introduce the songs from my album "WORK LIFE BALANCE" one by one with some context and behind-the-scenes information.

Today I am introducing my song?BREAKING THE BAMBOO CEILING?- watch and listen to it here:

WHY I WROTE IT

The Bamboo Ceiling, initially conceived by author Jane Hyun, describes the barriers Asians are facing in the professional space due to stereotypes and racism.

There are a lot of efforts being made in the diversity, equity and inclusion, and with my personal experiences I wanted to share some light of the barriers I was facing in my career so far.

Ironically, I did break the Asian stereotype a lot just by being so vocal with my music - and I am very happy to be so far somebody who was able to break the bamboo ceiling one career step at a time.

But we can all do better - no matter if its the glass ceiling, bamboo ceiling, or concrete ceiling: there should not be a ceiling at all.

BEHIND THE MUSIC

  • I tried to go for a 90s pop vibe with some Asian instruments to reflect the topic musically - simply because I spent a lot of childhood in the 90s and always wanted to write a song in that tone
  • "We work hard just to feel like we belong" has a deep meaning for me - it includes the stereotype of the hard working asian, but also the basic need of just trying to feel belonging

FUN FACTS

  • The first draft of the lyrics included a lot of namedropping - Simu Liu, Jonny Kim, Kamala Harris to name a few - but I changed it to make it about all Asians, not just about a few
  • This has been probably one of the most controversial songs I wrote, due to the fact that it's highlighting an issue - but this song is anyway not supposed to make people feel comfortable, it's supposed to contribute a little to change

In the next edition tomorrow I will introduce Track #8 of my album:?CLOUD'S LULLABY.

Being a white, male, you have me "checking my privilege." First listen, I just listened... might have even bopped a bit... maybe tapped a toe. But the second listen, I focused on the lyrics. If I had a musical bone in my my body, I might be inclined to approach the composing for Bamboo Ceiling like a troubadour using artistic devises to "activate inner wisdom, profound healing and universal truths."
