7 Body Language Hacks

7 Body Language Hacks

From my blog: www.winatbeingyou.com.

?Your body language is a window into the true meaning of your communication, irrespective of the words you use. People subconsciously read your signals and respond without even knowing why. When you are aware of your body language, you can control the conversation.

1. Facial Expressions

This is going to be the hardest part of learning about body language because you cannot see how your face reacts. We often pick up queues from our parents and siblings on facial expression. This means, these habits are with us since our early days of childhood. They will be difficult to break. The best way to take control of your facial expressions is to ask friends to critique you when you are in a conversation with them. Try to get people to engage you in various types of scenarios, ones that will cause a bit of discomfort for you. This way, you will express your emotions using facial expressions, and they can tell you about those reactions.

2. Mimic the Other Person

When you are speaking to a person one-on-one, try to mimic their body language. This gets you in tune with them, and they will feel more comfortable in the conversation, even if they don’t know the real reason why. It won’t be obvious and most won’t pick up that you are doing it. But, it will increase your chances of them being on board with what you have to say.

3. Observe People You Admire

Seek out someone you find admirable and pay attention to the body language he or she uses. This is even stronger when others admire the same person. If they are a big influence on others, much of it has to do with their body language. Do they smile a lot? Are they good listeners? See how they use their body language when talking to you as well as others. See what kinds of body language they use in a group of people.

4 Eye Contact

Always make eye contact with people you are conversing with. It instantly connects you with those people. When people don’t make eye contact, it can be an indication of insecurity, but even worse, it could be a sign that they are lying. If you don’t make eye contact, people may feel intuitively that you are lying, even when you are not. If you ever observe animals, they make it a point to look humans in the eye. They know intuitively about this communication mechanism.

5. Smile More Often

You will have better conversations when you smile. People will feel you are more open and receptive when you do. Make sure your smiles are genuine as phony smiles are just as easily detected. Smiling helps put you in a better mood anyway, which makes your conversations more flowing, all things being equal.

6. Constant Blinking

If you are one to blink often when you talk, you are giving the message that you are lying. People tend to blink excessively when they are lying. Whatever the reason, people will pick up on this when you are speaking. While it is true, some people blink more than others naturally, even when not speaking, try to keep your blinking down to a minimum if you don’t want to be thought of as lying.

7. Proximity

If you get too close to people when speaking to them, you are invading their space. Some people do this on purpose, especially when they are looking to get something from that person. The invasion causes discomfort which allows the offending person to strike. When your space is invaded, you will likely concede just to get the person to back off. If you want your conversations to be less confrontational, and you probably should, you should respect peoples’ space when speaking with them. Keep a good distance away but close enough for them to hear you.
