As the new school year approaches, parents can play a crucial role in helping their children transition smoothly. In this article, we'll provide seven essential tips to support your child's back-to-school journey. From building confidence to nurturing teacher relationships, these strategies aim to make the upcoming academic year a success for your family.
Model confidence
You can reduce child anxiety by displaying calm and confident behavior. Use positive affirmations like "You got this!" while remaining calm.
Routine Matters
Establish a consistent routine. Discuss and rehearse steps with your child, such as: what time to wake up, getting dressed, a healthy breakfast, etc.
Safety First
Describe the safe places at school to your child, and remind them that if they feel uncomfortable, the teacher, nurse or counselor is there to help them.
Being Nervous is Natural
Let the child express their fears. Perhaps you can offer stories of your own first-day jitters when you were a child, or discuss scenarios that worry them.
Day’s Recap
On your ride home, or at a set time later in the day, ask specific questions rather than general ones. For example: “What did you learn in Math today?”
Teacher Bond
Maintain a positive relationship with teachers for a team approach to your child’s education.
Celebrate!
Children should be recognized for their accomplishments and gains. Celebrate school milestones. Display and praise your child’s achievements.
