6. History of Paints
Paints may be as old as 40,000 years ago. Some caves were found by archaeologists, 100000 years old, painted with ochre, a natural clay earth pigment which used to impart colors ranging from yellow to deep orange or brown. Further excavations have found tools which were used to grind pigments and make paint-like material out of it.
Another interesting finding was made in Dendera, Egypt, where certain walls are found to still possess the brilliant colors as they were painted 2000 years ago. The Egyptians used to mix a gummy substance with the colors and apply them on the wall. There were 6 colors used during that time – White, Black, blue, red, yellow and green.
In another town of Rome, Ardea, painting was also done in ceiling and the paint was mixed with egg yolks so they were hardened and could adhere to the surface of walls and ceilings for a long time.
