Distractions, they come in all different shapes and sizes. This week's article is answering a reader's question about concentration and focus. Thank you Alidia Bosma !
Alidia asked to share any insights on how to concentrate on doing work. The question reminded me of reading the book Indistractable by Nir Eyal and discussing the insights in a Clubhouse Room about 1,5 year ago. Here is what I learned.
Introduction
In today's world, distractions are everywhere, and they can severely impact our productivity and focus. However, becoming indistractable is an important skill that can help you achieve your goals and lead a fulfilling life. In this article, I'll discuss the ideas of Nir Eyal, an expert in behavior design, and author of the book "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life," and provide actionable tips to help you become indistractable.
Understanding the Concept of Indistractability
Before I dive into the tips, let's first understand what indistractability means. Nir Eyal defines indistractability as the ability to choose what you want to pay attention to and ignore everything else. It means that you have control over your attention, rather than being at the mercy of external distractions.
According to Eyal, the reason why you get distracted is that you don't have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. you have goals and aspirations, but you don't have a plan to achieve them. This lack of clarity makes you vulnerable to distractions that take you away from what you really want to do.
To become indistractable, you need to start by setting clear goals and priorities. You need to identify what is important to you and make a plan to achieve it. This plan should be specific, measurable, and achievable. Once you have a plan in place, you need to develop habits and routines that support your goals and eliminate anything that gets in the way of them.
Tips to Become Indistractable
Tip 1: Identify Your Triggers
The first step to becoming indistractable is to identify the things that trigger distractions. It could be notifications on your phone, emails, social media, or even the people around you. Once you know what triggers you, you can take steps to avoid them.
For example, if you get distracted by social media, you can set a time limit for yourself or use an app like Freedom to block social media sites during work hours. If notifications on your phone distract you, you can turn them off or put your phone on silent mode.
Tip 2: Schedule Your Time
One of the most effective ways to become indistractable is to schedule your time. Set aside specific times for work, leisure, and socializing. When you're working, eliminate anything that distracts you, and focus on the task at hand. When you're taking a break, enjoy your leisure time without worrying about work.
By scheduling your time, you're creating boundaries between different activities and eliminating the temptation to multitask. When you have a clear plan for your day, you're less likely to get distracted by other things.
Tip 3: Create a Distraction-Free Workspace
Another important tip to become indistractable is to create a distraction-free workspace. Choose a quiet, comfortable place where you can work without interruptions. Eliminate any distractions in the environment, such as noise, clutter, or bright lights.
But what if, you don't work well in quiet environments? I feel you, I like working in an environment with other people like coffee shops. Most people tell me that they wouldn't get anything done in a coffeeshop, but for me it works.
So how to do it?
By choosing the right location (for me it is a coffeeshop), using noise-cancelling headphones, minimizing visual distractions, setting clear boundaries, and taking regular breaks, I created an environment that helps me focus, be productive, and creative.
Make sure you have all the tools and resources you need to complete your work within reach. This will help you stay focused and avoid the temptation to get up and look for something you need.
Tip 4: Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment. It's a powerful tool to help you become indistractable because it helps you stay focused and avoid getting distracted.
Start by taking a few deep breaths and focusing on your breath. Notice the sensations in your body and the thoughts that come up. Whenever you get distracted, gently bring your attention back to your breath. This has been a gamechanger for me.
Practicing mindfulness regularly can help you develop the ability to stay focused and avoid distractions. You can also use mindfulness techniques to manage stress and anxiety, which can be major distractions.
Tip 5: Use the Two-Minute Rule
The two-minute rule is a simple but effective technique that can help you overcome procrastination and avoid distractions. The rule states that if a task can be done in two minutes or less, you should do it right away.
A couple of week's ago someone asked me for help and while they were standing waiting I called a person that could help them. Two surprised faces on the immediate action taking. 2-minute rule!
The idea behind the two-minute rule is that small tasks can often pile up and create mental clutter, which can lead to procrastination and distraction. By tackling these small tasks right away, you're clearing the mental clutter and reducing the likelihood of getting distracted later on.
Tip 6: Practice Active Listening
Active listening is the practice of fully focusing on the person speaking and paying attention to their words, tone, and body language. This is an important skill to have if you want to become indistractable because it helps you stay present and engaged in the moment.
Whenever you're in a conversation, make a conscious effort to listen actively. Put away your phone, avoid multitasking, and give the person speaking your full attention. Repeat back what they're saying to ensure that you're fully understanding them.
By practicing active listening, you're not only improving your communication skills, but you're also developing the ability to stay focused and avoid distractions.
Tip 7: Set Boundaries
Setting boundaries is an important part of becoming indistractable. Boundaries help you establish clear expectations with others and protect your time and attention.
For example, if you're working from home, you may need to set boundaries with your family or roommates to ensure that they understand when you're working and when you're available to socialize. If you're constantly interrupted during work hours, you're more likely to get distracted and lose focus.
Setting boundaries also means learning to say no when necessary. If a request or invitation doesn't align with your goals or priorities, it's okay to decline.
Conclusion
Becoming indistractable is a skill that requires practice and patience. It's not something that can be achieved overnight, but with consistent effort, anyone can develop the ability to control their attention and choose their life.
In summary, to become indistractable, you need to identify your triggers, schedule your time, create a distraction-free workspace, practice mindfulness and active listening, use the two-minute rule, and set boundaries. These tips can help you stay focused, productive, and in control of your attention.
Remember, becoming indistractable is not about eliminating all distractions from your life. It's about learning to manage them in a way that supports your goals and priorities. With the right mindset and habits, you can become indistractable and achieve anything you set your mind to.
How indistractable are you?
