The 7-7-7 Equation

The 7-7-7 Equation

This is a trick someone shared with me years ago that helps guide decisions that she makes, day in and day out. It really makes them pretty simple. It plays on the worst realistic outcome.

It's called 7-7-7. Whenever you decide to put yourself out there, whether or not to take a risk, to do something or not, ask yourself the following:

What’s the effect 7 hours from now?

What’s the effect 7 months from now?

What’s the effect 7 years from now?

Real-world example: I’m going to do a stand-up comedy gig in my home city, but I don’t think I’m good enough and that I’m going to blow it when I’m up there. Maybe I shouldn’t do it because I don’t want people laughing AT me and not WITH me or folks I know thinking badly of me.

What's the impact going to be 7 hours from now? Will anybody still remember? Will anybody still be talking about it?

What's the effect going to be 7 months from now? In all likelihood, 7 months from now, nobody is going to care, nobody is going to remember, it's not going to mean a darn thing.

And certainly 7 years from now, I’ll never think about it, it's just going to be something that happened, but it's going to be completely irrelevant in my life and in everyone else that was around. Right? Unless I am really good!!!

Looking at things from that perspective gives you the confidence to realize that you can do something and not have to fear rejection. Because in the unlikely event that you are rejected, or that somebody laughs at you or made to feel bad, in all likelihood 7 hours from now but most certainly 7 months from now, and absolutely 7 years from now, it's a nonissue.

But if it works out, then it's a really big benefit to you. You got it, right?

Let’s flip it around. You decide you're going to go with a gun and rob the 7-Eleven. What's the effect going to be 7 hours from now? You're probably going to be arrested. What's the effect going to be 7 months from now? You might be in prison. What's the effect going to be 7 years from now? You're going to have a felony record.

You can use the same equation to realize that you definitely should not be doing that.

Try it out. Play out some real-life scenarios for yourself using the 7-7-7 equation and tell me what you think.

Have a great day.

Great article Richard. I’m going to start applying this methodology and see the impact it has on my decision making. I’m pretty confident it’s going to be quite effective. Thanks for sharing ??
