THE £6m PRIVATE COLLECTION OF SWISS MILLIONAIRE GERALD BUGNON - EIGHT EXCEPTIONAL ALFA ROMEO RACE & SPORTS CARS & A RACE BOAT ?FROM 1950 -1970

?

The fabulous Alfa Romeo race and sports car collection of Gerald Bugnon estimated to be worth £6million will be sold from the French Osenat auction house on Sunday April 21. The collection comprises eight cars from the 1950s, 60,s and 70s and an Alfa Romeo engined race boat.

Driven by a passion for the Italian brand, this exceptional collection of Alfa Romeos were carefully selected by Mr Bugnon and their auction will create much excitement at the Osenat sale dedicated to them. From the elegant and competitive 1958 Giulietta TI sedan, to the 1965 Alfa Romeo Racer water sports beast, to the splendid 1969 Tipo 33/2 Daytona, each model embodies excellence, innovation and passion. ?These are Alfa Romeos that have set the standards for beauty, performance and technology.

Alfa Romeo enthusiasts and experts alike agree that: “This is a serious collection of historic significance for Alfa Romeo. Many of the cars bear race wins which adds to their glamour and interest.”

The Gérald Bugnon collection was kick started on a ski trip to the slopes of Val d’Isère. Approaching the station, the Bugnon family were overtaken by an Alfa-Romeo Giulietta Ti. Both the father and son David were captivated by the thunderous sound of this beautiful Italian car as it tore past them. David Bugnon? says: “From then on, I never stopped pestering my father to buy an Alfa-Romeo. And that’s what he did, buying a Giullietta for himself and a GTV for my mother. He has remained loyal to the brand for many many years throughout his professional working life.”

It was at the age of 50 that Gerald Bugnon decided to build a Giullietta collection. He first acquired a Spider, then an SS. He carried out research, learned the history of Alfa-Romeo and decided to develop his collection by focusing on the most beautiful and the rarest models. At the same time, he participated in numerous rallies.

“My father combines two passions: Alfa-Romeos and his friends. ?When he signed up for the historic Monte-Carlo Rally, he lined up 4 or 5 cars which he lent to his friends to race. The Bugnon family has always maintained relations with Alfa Romeo from this and my grandparents, my parents, myself and now my children have all driven Alfa Romeos.”

“As my father was racing more and more in VHC (historic competition vehicles) he created a team engaged in VHC: IL BISCIONE CORSA ROSSA. And as he didn't do things by halves, he ended up hiring drivers (all ex-Swiss champions) to host the various championships. In these rallies, drivers like Romain Dumas and his dad Maurice or the famous Swiss tightrope walker, Olivier Gillet accompanied by his compatriot and sailor, Steve Ravussin, were able to defend the colors of Il Biscione Corsa Romand, a team he created for participate in the VHC European Rally Championship.”

This requirement was also manifested in the absolute respect for the history of each of its automobiles, both in the supply of spare parts and for post-race servicing. That meant very serious work being carried out within the team race stable. In this, he was supported throughout all these years by his mechanic, pilot and right-hand man who took care of transport, administration, in short, almost everything, Olivier Gillet.

TIME TO SELL:

“But now the time has come to sell the collection. My father still has a ?passion for Alfa Romeos? but to a lesser extent now as other activities prevent us from fully enjoying this incredible collection and especially maintaining it as it should be. It is for this reason that we decided to part with the “historical” part of the collection and to keep only the latest cars acquired by the family.”

The Alfa Romeo 33 marks the brand’s return to the highest level of motorsport. Indeed, at the end of 1951, Alfa Romeo withdrew from all international competition, the famous Disco Volante, intended to race in the 1952 24 hours of Le Mans, will never race there. At the beginning of the 1960s, with the collaboration of Autodelta, Alfa Romeo returned to competitive success thanks to the fabulous GTA, TZ and TZ2. These successes will push Alfa Romeo to consider a return to international competitions. So in September 1964, project 105.33 was launched. In September 1965, a first prototype equipped with the TZ2 engine was produced. For the engine, the engineers' choice was a two-liter V8, developed secretly during the 1950s. Intended to race in the Sport Prototype championship, the 33 is the second Alfa Romeo equipped with an engine in position rear center after the Tipo 512 in 1939.

After intensive development on the Balloco track, the car is ready. On March 6, 1967, the car was entered in the Fléron hill climb, in Belgium. This event marks the triumphant return of Alfa Romeo to the highest level. Unfortunately, reliability was not there for this first 33. Carlo Chiti then revised the car from top to bottom, the examples built to date were also modified. This 33 B will make its debut at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona, winning a victory in the less than 2000 cc category. Following this

success, the car was quickly nicknamed the 33/2 Daytona. At the end of the 1968 season, Autodelta stopped operating the 33/2, concentrating its efforts on the future 33/3. All 33/2 are then resold to satellite teams as well as to the brand's various European importers. This is how in 1969, the Alfa Romeo importer in France, SOFAR, wishing to promote the brand in France, acquired three Alfa Romeo 33/2s. These cars will be entered in the Sport Prototype championship as well as in the biggest French events. The example we are offering you, chassis 75033009, is one of them.

At the beginning of the sixties, Alfa Romeo began work on the replacement for the sports Giulietta. On the mechanical side, the new Giulia is equipped with the 1570 cm3, greatly revised for the occasion with aluminum block and cylinder head. It is powered by two double-barrel Weber 40 carburetors, developing 112 horsepower in the civilian version and 170 horsepower in competition.

The bodywork is entrusted to Zagato which, based on the work carried out on the SZ Coda Tronca, will entrust the project to Ercole Spada. It will offer a line with exceptional aerodynamics. The whole result was one of the best competition cars of its time. If 100 examples were initially planned, Alfa Romeo produced 112 examples in total. The history of our example begins in November 1964, when Alfa Romeo GB LTD received a TZ chassis 750071.

The Alfa Romeo 33 marks the brand's return to the highest level of motor sport. In 1960, Zagato presented the Zagato sprint, the coachbuilder's response to Bertone's Sprint Speciale. The Sprint Zagato is much sportier than its competitor.

Weighing only 785 kg for around 115 horsepower, the Sprint Zagato was quickly adopted by many drivers racing from success to success thanks in particular to its maximum speed of 200 km/h.

The example we are offering you was delivered new on 02/16/1962 by the Aix-les-Bains dealership to Jean Gonguet. An amateur driver racing notably for AC Savoie, he took part in the Coupes du Salon in October 1962, winning a victory in the 1000/1300 cm3 class and an honorable eighth place overall.

Zagato, not being equipped with a wind tunnel, carried out a series of tests on highways, using the cornerstones as a reference, and the faithful designer Ercole Spada as a timekeeper seated on the ground.

The final result was ready a few months later and Zagato himself entered the new SZ at the Monza Grand Prix in 1961, winning the race, ahead of the SZ revised by Micheloti. To follow up on this success, production of the second series of SZ was launched. Mechanically, the second series takes up all the attributes of the first SZ. Notable difference, despite the lengthening of the car, it loses 15 kg and now displays a weight contained at 840 kg. Thanks to these improvements, the top speed now well exceeds 200 km/h, flirting with 215 km/h. The example we are presenting to you left the Zagato workshops on December 7, 1962. On January 15, 1963, the car was delivered by the Dutch importer Louwman & Parqui located in Leidschendam. This is one of the rare chassis equipped from the start with front disc brakes.

Born in 1955, the Giulietta is considered, at Alfa Romeo, as the light at the end of the tunnel as the immediate post-war period was complicated for the firm in Biscione. Designed around its engine, this small but elegant four-door sedan was well born, both in terms of its driving qualities and its finish at a competitive price. The TI version for Tourisme Internazionale was presented in 1957. It was equipped with a 1300 cc aluminum engine with double overhead camshafts. Its 65 horsepower then allowed it to reach nearly 160 km/h.

It notably distinguished itself in the famous events of the Tour de France Auto, the Mille Miglia, the Monte Carlo and others...

The example we are presenting was delivered new in France to the brand's Parisian dealership on April 24, 1958 in its current configuration: Blue Elvezia with houndstooth upholstery and trim.

We find its trace in 1970 in Haute Garonne when it is registered 188 QF 31. It will remain in the Toulouse region until 1990.

It was then acquired by an enthusiast from Charente Maritime who kept it until 2001. Mr. Bugnon acquired this Giulietta in July 2001, the car was then in poor condition.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the Hoffman Motor Cars company, located in New York, became the official importer of Alfa Romeo in the United States, immediately seeing the potential of a roadster derived from the future Giulietta Sprint which was on the verge to be presented. At the end of 1953, Alfa Romeo, in close collaboration with Hoffman, worked on the development of a roadster based on the Giulietta Sprint chassis. Development will be entrusted to Rudolf Hruska, the brand's engineer already in charge of the Sprint project. Very quickly, a motorized chassis is ready. It is numbered AR 1495 0000. This one will never be bodied. Hruska contacted the Turin coachbuilders Bertone and Pininfarina to entrust them with two chassis each. It is up to them to carry out their proposals for the future “Giulietta Spider”. Pininfarina will receive chassis 003 and 002 and will produce two non-functional styling studies on these two chassis.

After validation of the design by Max Hoffman, chassis 0003 was sent back to Turin this time for the construction of a functional prototype.

It is this car that we are presenting to you today. After being re-bodied, our chassis will make 4 round trips between New York and Turin for final validation, Pininfarina thus winning the contract against Bertone.

The collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Bertone will give rise to exceptional projects thanks to its genius designer Franco Scaglione. The “BAT” (Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica) and “Disco Volante” Projects gave birth to the “Sprint Speciale” in prototype form in 1957 then in series from 1959. From 1960, the car evolved to comply with American standards.

The first series, type 750 SS, was produced in around 100 units to obtain approval for use in competition. This series is distinguished by its absence of bumpers and by its nose nicknamed “Muso Basso”.

The example that we are presenting to you, the 48th produced, was delivered new by the Porto dealership in Portugal under the registration OP 21-55 on August 19, 1959. Its first owner is none other than Manuel Nogueira Pinto , famous Portuguese pilot of the sixties. As soon as he received his car, he entered several competitions. He won a second place during the Vila do Conde race in 1959, entered under number 11.

Introduced in 1965, the GTA was the official competition version of the Giulia Sprint GT and was produced in road (stradale) and racing (corsa) variants. The latter was the responsibility of the competition department of the Autodelta factory.

The GTA was differentiated by its aluminum body panels, its Plexiglas side and rear windows and its lightweight interior fittings.

As a result, the GTA weighs 200 kilograms less than a Sprint GT. Alfa's classic 1,570 cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine underwent significant modifications for the GTA, with the angle between the valves reduced from 90 to 80 degrees and the size of the latter significantly increased. As there was no longer room between them for a central spark plug, we opted for double ignition. In road trim, the revised engine produced 115 hp with up to 150 horsepower available in racing trim.

The GTA made its racing debut on March 20, 1966 at Monza where Andrea de Adamich and Teodoro Zeccoli triumphed in the Jolly Club four-hour race.

Angelo Molinari, renowned for his outboard motor competition hulls, is also very present in the inboard racer categories, more particularly in the 1300 cm3 category at the turn of the 1960s.

The boat we are presenting to you was acquired in 1971 by Michel Barone, a great racing driver.

The latter, running on a 1300 cm3 racer, exchanged his machine in 1971 for this Racer in order to compete in the R2 class. Equipped with an Alfa Romeo engine rebored to 1,500 cm3 to compete in R2, this boat allowed Michel Barone to win the 1973 world championship.

In good condition but immobilized for around ten years, this boat will need to be serviced and restarted before returning to nautical competitions.

The Collector Cars Department

A forerunner in his market, Jean-Pierre Osenat set up a classic car department within his firm in 1977, barely a year after he became an auctioneer. Forty-six years later, this experience has made Osenat one of France's top three automotive houses. The department is notably responsible for the dispersal of the Gombert collection, which resulted in a still unrivalled sales record for an Alpine (A 210 prototype sold for €872,800), as well as numerous sales records, including a 1939 Bugatti 57 C Stelvio sold for €1,269,000, and the world auction record for a 1939 Citro?n Traction 15/6 cabriolet, sold for €612,440.

Osenat also boasts a major asset in this sector: its own showroom for the cars entrusted to it, a veritable jewel case set at the foot of the Chateau de Fontainebleau. With a vast network of major collectors in France and abroad, and contacts with the most renowned automobile clubs and historians, Bellifontaine is able to appraise, value and sell all types of automobiles, in all styles and from all eras, making it the renowned auction house it is today.

Comprising a team of enthusiastic associates and four specialist car and motorcycle consultants, Osenat's Automobiles department is at the service of its customers, assisting them in both the sale and purchase of vehicles at auction,
