69 Indian HEIs feature in the QS World Rankings 2024

In a significant stride for India's higher education sector, the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject have showcased remarkable progress for Indian universities.?

Released on Wednesday, the rankings revealed a notable growth for Indian HEIs, with 69 institutions from India featured in the top 500 list, marking a remarkable 19.4% surge compared to the institutions featured in the list last year.

How has India performed in comparison to other nations?

In the Asian region, India stands as the second country with 69 featured universities. India has also held the fourth spot in the total number of ranked entries, trailing behind China, Japan, and South Korea.?

Notably, the 12 Institutes of Eminence (IoE), representing a fraction of Indian universities, contributed 40% of the country's total entries, with 47 IoE positions in the top 100. These results highlight the success of the IoE program in driving university rankings improvement, with 82% of IoE entries maintaining or climbing up in the rankings.

How have Indian HEIs performed?

Among top performing HEIs this year are Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, have all secured spots among the top 50 globally for business and management studies.?

On the other hand, Jawaharlal Nehru University also made its debut in the rankings, securing the 20th spot worldwide in the development studies category.

Another notable achievement was by Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, which secured the 24th spot globally in Dentistry, boasting a perfect score of 100/100 in the H-Index metric, a measure of both the productivity and impact of published work.

In what areas have Indian HEIs demonstrated improvement?

In terms of research, India demonstrated notable progress, with a 20% improvement in Citations per Paper and a 16% growth in the International Research Network indicator. However, challenges persist in securing citations in premier global journals, with only 15% of Indian research cited in these publications between 2017 and 2021.

Moreover, six Indian universities ranked among the world's top 10 for employer reputation in specific subjects, according to feedback from employers surveyed by QS. Some of these notable institutions include Symbiosis International (Deemed University) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B).

Jessica Turner, CEO, QS, acknowledged the educational hurdles facing India, stressing the significance of delivering top-notch tertiary education to address the surging demand.?

She commended the advancement of Indian programs across diverse rankings, highlighting the beneficial influence of well-regulated private institutions in elevating higher education standards. Turner underscored the ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing educational standards, expanding access to education, fostering digital readiness, and bolstering global competitiveness, under the NEP as direct contributors to India's positive trajectory.

Turner’s analysis mirrors India's dedication to achieving the ambitious targets outlined in the National Education Policy, which aims for a 50% gross enrollment ratio by 2035. This has also been evident in a notable uptick in Indian programs featured in the rankings, rising from 355 to 454, showcasing India’s commitment to upward development.
