#67 Why You Should Systematise Working on Your Team

How you can build an effective team

Make the time

If you want to drive the performance of your team, you need to protect time for the team members to work on the team, rather than purely focusing on the work the team is delivering.

Creating a vision of what ‘good’ is going to look like for the team is an essential component for you to deliver the business imperative impacts you are accountable for.

3 Things

Here are three things you can do right now to build a more effective team:

  1. Ask every team member what it would take for your team to be the best team they have ever been a part of. Capture the output and shape the key elements that will work well for your team.
  2. Check in with each member of the team independently, to confirm their understanding of the highest priority impacts your team must deliver in the next quarter… year… three years. If you get a diverse range of responses, plan more communication and sharing of the key results for your team, to ensure alignment.
  3. Ask the team what one change should be made (and can be made within one week) to make the biggest difference to the effectiveness of your team. Agree on one change and enact it immediately. Repeat monthly.
