A 66-year-old Man Armed with a Rifle in the Hospital Parking Lot was Shot and Killed by Police Officers outside of Trinity Grand Haven Hospital on July 9. The Two Officers Involved Have Been Placed on Leave Pending an Investigation.
Michigan State Police are still investigating after an armed man was shot and killed by Grand Haven police last weekend.?The victim’s name has not been released.?The incident happened?outside Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 9.
According to police, when they arrived on-scene, a 66-year-old man was found in the parking lot armed with a rifle. When officers attempted to intervene, he was shot and killed.?Police said the incident happened too quickly to call a social worker.
The shooting is under investigation by Michigan State Police. ?A spokesperson for Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health said that the hospital campus was placed on a temporary lockdown shortly after 5 a.m. on July 9 and patients, visitors and colleagues were safe and unharmed.?
Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke said “Generally, with this type of situation, officers would respond, make contact, and ensure scene safety. Community mental health professionals are on call. In this case, the incident was rapidly evolving and took place very quickly, so there were no community mental health professionals on-scene. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and all who were involved in this incident,” Hawke said.
Trinity Health released the following statement Sunday afternoon: "In coordination with local authorities, the Grand Haven hospital campus was placed on a temporary lockdown shortly after 5 a.m. this morning while police responded to a situation. The situation is now resolved and the hospital has re-opened. All patients, visitors and colleagues are safe and unharmed."
