#66 Can Digital Fare Meters Fix Goa’s Taxi Troubles?

With millions of visitors every year, Goa has become a hub for taxi services. The state has around 20,000 registered taxis, with over 18,000 already equipped with digital fare meters. To further streamline fare calculation and ensure transparency, the Transport Department has issued the Draft Goa Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 2025, amending the Goa Motor Vehicles Rules, 1991.

A key update is the recognition of App-based Aggregators as fare meters. Motor cabs using apps like Goa Miles can now treat the app itself as a fare meter, eliminating the need for physical printers—as long as the app provides SMS or email-based invoices. This change aims to standardize fares and enhance digital invoicing, improving transparency for both locals and tourists.

Will this make taxi fares fairer in Goa, or do you think more changes are needed? Share your feedback by clicking the link here.
