6.1 - Tech is the new climate change

In the everyday chugging of life, we get bogged down by our daily woes

We churn out everything run of the mill, and miss all the dangerous cues.

Oh. Oh. Oh. I’m present you say

Yes, you are – mentally, virtually, digitally

That is more like the relationships we hold by superstitions

We’ve reduced ourselves to thermal projections on pixel displays

And express our different emotions through data renditions

We’ve replaced faces with interfaces

And only in our chat history do we have life’s traces

We have embedded tech through our day and night

Only to be saved as data on a byte!

Man found heights walking on four rather than two,

and ease when he rode on hooves and horseshoes,

He replaced then his horse with engines, while,

his legs adapted to a life with an automobile.

It wasn’t the case, later, when he burnt gasoline,

And added pesticides to his water,

He began fighting the excess he created,

And at the fight he became smarter.

Maslow’s pyramid stated layers of 5

That existed at a time during no Wi-Fi

It stated the hierarchy of needs from food to ego

Which tech hoped to improve all the way.

Man then made a calculator, that could read write and speak,

which meant to share the power of geeks

But with it he created an excess, whose

Problems didn’t lag its reasons for use.

Social media, gaming and fake news

Has made us victims of abuse

Of a new kind, still not understood

turning us apprehensive while keeping us glued.  

Our children expose their eyes, ears and self-esteem

be hacked by attention mongers that get streamed

And slowly the excess consumption

places their health beyond redemption.

We must go onto ask ourselves -

Are these digital natives capable

of handling their exposure to a device-content spree

served in excess, anytime for free?

The sword is only as powerful as the hand that wields it

So, we strengthen our hand on sticks before swords

Let tech transform our children in the age of information

But, let’s start to train them to manage that transformation!
