61# - At least 50% of Project Management and PMO activities will be done by Artificial Intelligence soon

At the end of the post you'll find information about our upcoming webinar on Application of AI and Project Management?(16 May) and The Great Implementation (24/25 May)

Just a few months ago, the #projectmanagement profession was still skeptical about introducing #artificialintelligence in projects; it was seen as something happening far in the future.

Though we can now confirm that AI is revolutionizing how #projects are managed and will soon help #projectmanagers be more efficient, make better decisions, and improve project outcomes.

One week ago I launched a LinkedIn poll to find out the opinion of experts around the world, and there is a general consensus that we are starting to see a mayor disruption that will bring huge opportunities.

AI will do more than 50% of project management activities.

These is a selection of the many of the great comments that project management colleagues made on this critical topic:

  • I would say more like 20%. I could see l predicting release readiness, refining user experience, analysis of missing planned activities, program / portfolio schedule contention. My dearest hope would be an assessment of change absorption and overload.
  • Areas that will surely be impacted: Planning and Execution. We wlll be able to easily create different scenrios that will take us to the project's ccompletion. However: algorithms will be developed for programs that will impress leadership into thnking: well, "the COMPUTER says the project will be done by 'X' date and 'Y' cost...but the Project Manger says otherwise....get rid of the human because they tell us what we don't want to hear." I guess I better start learning how to code project management AI software!
  • AI can assist Project Management, but the AI will not be able to replace Project Managers.
  • Data is and will continue to be more abundant… discerning what data is relevant and how it may (or may not) be critical to the task, phase, and/or project, requieres skilled judgement and expertise found with PMs and Project Leaders.
  • Most of the reporting needs will be done by AI. The client management and interpersonal tasks will still need a project manager. This will be a good thing as reports and reporting take a lot of time that would be better spent focusing on delivering the project motivating, team members and engaging with client to manage expectations.
  • AI can achieve maybe 50% depending on the project and the environment. AI can contribute to activities such as scheduling, forecasting, budgeting, risking etc. but they will still have to be predominantly human-led and require a human to input the real world activity for analysis. Humans still have to execute in the real world, unless this AI is in a robotic form to physically perform as another team member.
  • AI won't do any of it well in 7 years. I think it will take longer to do it well. Will need more PMs to cleanup the mess that AI makes. Can't program for individual anomalies that exist everywhere throughout every step.

I suspect these are the 50% of PM and PMO activities that really have nothing to do with project success or failure but have evolved to keep people busy doing stuff that senior management think they need. But instead of getting rid of the waste these have become industrial processes. And AI will simply reinforce the myth that these are necessary and that people aren’t. So the people will be made redundant when they could have been far better used by contributing to projects as creatives and problem solvers. And guess what - project failures will continue regardless because this is focusing on the wrong problem and therefore can’t be a good solution!

It will be very interesting to see and be part of this major #transformation. Hopefully, as a society, we can combine this with maintaining and even increasing those key #humanbeing #values, such as kindness, love, gratitude, people-to-people relationships, among others...

This technological transformation through artificial intelligence is happening before our very eyes at exponentially increasing speeds. But we shouldn’t forget that the ability to imbue people with purpose, to motivate them, and inspire them to seek to achieve a greater goal is going to be difficult to achieve through artificial intelligence. We have to be the ones who lead, inspire, and motivate people to grow and transform day by day and thus achieve the goals. We have to challenge ourselves to be more than project managers, we have to become true project leaders!! Gracias Antonio!! ????
