6+1 CV Tips that will Secure Your Next Interview
In today's competitive job market, a well-crafted CV is essential for capturing the attention of recruiters, securing that first interview and hopefully your next dream job. Your CV serves as your professional 'passport', showcasing your skills, experiences, and qualifications but keep in mind that countless applicants are aiming for the same positions. This is exactly why it's so crucial to master the art of CV writing in order to to stand out from the crowd. Having been in the industry for more than 5 years and after having gone through more than 8,500 resumes , this article will try to list my 6 key-points that will certainly pick the interest of Recruiters and will without doubt land you an interview with your desired company. So without further delay let's unlock your CV writing potential.
1. Choose a SIMPLE Template
When it comes to building your CV, simplicity is key. Try to avoid using flashy colors, images, or bold designs as they usually confuse the recruiter and may lead to your CV not even being read in the first place. Instead you should opt for a clean and professional template that highlights your content effectively by using standard fonts and formatting that is easy to read, ensuring that the focus remains on the information you are presenting rather than anything else. A simple and consise template ensures that your CV can be easily scanned and understood by recruiters, doubling the chances of grabbing their attention and landing yourself an interview.
2. Profile Summary (SELL yourself in 3-5 sentences before detailing where you've worked and what you've studied)
Your profile summary is your chance to make a strong first impression on your potential employers. Spend time and craft a compelling summary of yourself in 3-5 sentences that highlights your unique selling points, key qualifications, and career goals. Focus on your core skills and achievements, rather than diving into specific work experience or education details right away. The purpose of the profile summary is to grab the reader's attention in the first few seconds of getting your application, so make it concise, impactful, and tailored to the position you are targeting.
3. Professional Experience (NOT related to the position= NO ONE cares)
When detailing your professional experience, it's essential to prioritize relevance by highlight positions, responsibilities, and achievements that directly relate to the job you are applying for. Avoid including irrelevant or outdated experiences that do not add value to your application and instead tailor your descriptions to emphasize how your past roles have equipped you with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the desired position. By focusing on relevant experiences, you demonstrate your ability to transfer your expertise to the new role quickly and effectively.
4. Education (NO courses or grades, unless it is an academic position)
When including your studies in your CV, it is important to provide the necessary information without overwhelming the reader. Unless you are applying for an academic position, avoid listing individual courses or specific grades and instead, focus on the highest level of education you have completed, including the degree or qualification obtained and the institution attended. Also don't forget to highlight any relevant honors, awards, or specializations that enhance your qualifications for the target position.
5. NEVER list the degree in a foreign language (it only matters if you speak it NOT if you passed the exams 5 years ago)
While it is essential to showcase your language skills on your CV, including a degree or a grade in a foreign language may not be relevant especially if the degree is outdated or your expertise on the specific language is not what it used to be. Moreover, it is better to only include languages that you can speak or write on demand especially if you come from a bilingual background. This way you will save yoruself from an awkard interaction in a scenario where the recruiter speaks to you in one of your listed languages and you are unable to formulate even a sentence without stuttering.

6. SOFT skills are just as important as TECHNICAL skills
While technical skills demonstrate your expertise in specific areas, soft skills showcase your ability to collaborate, communicate, and adapt in various work environments. When highlighting soft skills on your CV, carefully select those that align with the job requirements and will add value to the organization. You may consider skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication and even go a step further by providing examples that demonstrate how you have applied these skills in previous roles. Also don't forget to emphasize the positive impact they've had on your performance and the success of projects or teams you have been a part of.
Instead of a closing remark I decided to instead add a bonus point that while not being directly related to any position, will definitely give you the upper hand and paint an interesting picture of what a recruiter can expect from you.
BONUS TIP: Add hobbies & activities and show you're an interesting individual (Not everything in life is work and studying)
Including a section on hobbies and activities in your CV allows you to present a well-rounded image to the recruiter. Through sharing relevant hobbies you can provide interesting talking points during interviews and it also showcases your personality, interests, and commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. By including these hobbies and activities, you 'humanize' your CV and show recruiters that you bring a diverse perspective and a range of experiences to the table, making you a well-rounded and appealing candidate.
So next time you apply for a position, tailor your CV using these points and you can thank me after you've accepted your interview invitation!
