60km/h Speed Limit for Bikers as Punjab Builds Separate Lanes

In a significant decision to counter accidents and control the traffic flow, the Punjab government has announced a fixed speed limit of 60 kilometers/hour for bikers across the province. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Talking to a press conference, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari expressed concern over the increasing number of road deaths. “It is heartbreaking to see lives lost due to overspeeding,” she stated, highlighting the importance of public safety regulations.

The minister further emphasized that strict enforcement steps will be taken to implement the new speed limit across the province. “Motorcycles will not be allowed to exceed 60km/h,” Bukhari confirmed.

Separate Bike Lanes in Lahore?

Meanwhile, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has started building separate bike lanes in the city. In the first phase, the bikers’ lane on Ferozepur Road is being prepared. According to the chief minister, “All other main roads in all districts will also have separate bikers’ lanes to prevent accidents and ensure smooth flow of traffic,” she added.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the LDA Engineering Wing had started preparing a feasibility report and designing the project. “Initially, the project will be implemented on three major roads of the city,” the reports stated, adding that dedicated lanes will be prepared from Kalma Chowk to Siddique Trade Center (both sides), Canal Road to Lahore Bridge on Ferozepur Road, while the authority is specifying the third road.

Moreover, the tracks will be reportedly prepared as per modern standards, with special road signs and specific carpeting while keeping the traffic flow in mind. The need for separate lanes for bikers is quite essential for the safety of bike riders as the fast lanes are for cars and have high chances of an accident. The individual lanes will also help in ensuring a smoother flow of traffic.
