60 Seconds: VW, Hyundai, and Global Sales

60 Seconds: VW, Hyundai, and Global Sales

Volkswagen: Strength at Home, Struggles Abroad

  • Germany: EV sales dropped 23% in May. VW leads in all-electric sales with 5,174 units, surpassing Tesla's 1,896. They're also entering the energy storage market, aiming to double Germany's capacity.
  • China: VW faces tough competition, selling less than half of Tesla's 1.31M EVs and holding only 3.3% of the market. Sales are expected to drop by 7% while the market grows by over 25%.

Hyundai: From Peaks to Valleys

  • Global Sales: Declined for the seventh consecutive month in May, with a 20% drop in plug-in car shipments.
  • India: Planning a $3B IPO to boost expansion. The Ioniq 5 saw a 59% sales increase in the U.S.

Chinese Automakers: Thriving Despite Tariffs

  • Global Sales: Outpaced U.S. rivals in 2023 with 13.4M vehicles sold.
  • Challenges: Facing new EU and U.S. tariffs, but BYD continues to profit significantly, marking a shift in the global automotive landscape.

Home-field advantage works both ways.

Companies trying to hold their home market while also pushing into Chinese companies' territory are showing mixed results, while Chinese companies are doing pretty well across the globe.

Maybe tariffs will make the grass greener on "this" side of the fence, but maybe it will just make the fence taller.
