6 Ways to Win

6 Ways to Win

  1. Authenticity.

2. Transparency.

3. Trustworthiness.

4. Leadership.

5. Dependability.

6. Kindness.

That's it. That's the secret recipe to success.

I can count on one hand the number of companies I've worked for that resonated with my core values. I can count on one hand the number of relationships that I've truly felt comfortable enough in to be my authentic self. I can count on one hand the number of dependable friendships I've carried through the years.

The fact is that the traits we're looking for in our relationships, business partnerships, or friendships are the same. We want to know we can show up as our authentic selves, be transparent and receive the same in return, trust our partnerships, give and receive strong leadership, and have all of that embodied with dependable kindness.

I've been on both sides of the business conversation. I've been the employee squirming through a season of growth and hard-earned lessons, and I've been the employer - supporting that entry-level employee through their journey.

I've been the leader in a relationship - some would say in my masculine energy - calling the shots and bringing in the bacon. I've been a follower of others.

At the end of all of it here's what I've learned:

  1. It's better to be transparent with your people than to beat around the bush. If you want someone to follow you, you need to show them that you know how to lead them with confidence. Those conversations aren't always comfortable, but I'll guarantee you that if you're honest with your people - they will be honest in return. Transparency and trustworthiness go hand in hand.
  2. If you're not being authentic with yourself, or within your relationships, they will never reach their fullest potential. The same goes for your business. If you don't understand your brand, you'll never find true success. In either circumstance, you have to know who you are, what you're doing, and why you're doing it. Otherwise, you can't expect people to have much reason to buy into what you're selling.
  3. Do it all with a heart of kindness. Remember that at the end of your life what matters is the legacy you leave behind you. You can be the most successful person in the world, or have the longest relationship on record, but if you aren't doing it with a servant's heart the quality of what you leave will speak for itself. The heart of all success is the people who help you achieve it.

Whether you're looking for love or trying to grow a business I'll give you the same advice. Put your people first. Provide them with a safe place to learn, grow and flourish. Embrace their mistakes and guide them as they navigate their path. Be transparent with them and allow them to invest in the future with you.

Remember, at the end of the day, you're working with the same goals in mind.
