6 Ways to Improve Productivity and Work/Home Balance

6 Ways to Improve Productivity and Work/Home Balance

As an Executive and Transformational Coach, I've had the privilege of helping individuals navigate the complexities of their personal and professional lives. Through my podcast, "Mindful Paths ," co-hosted with health and vitality coach Hari Kalymnios, we've enjoyed exploring the intricacies of mindset, productivity, and performance. Today, I want to share some insights to help you achieve a better work-life balance, cultivate a positive attitude, and improve your productivity and performance.

?

"Your thoughts control your feelings, not your circumstances."?- Sydney Banks.

?

I love this quote because our perception and mindset are crucial in shaping our emotional responses, even more so than our external circumstances. If we can change our thought patterns and emotional narratives, we can better manage our reactions to situations - no matter how stressful they may be.

?

The key to success is understanding the synergy between your mind and your actions. You can unlock your true potential by training your mind to focus on positivity and setting clear, achievable goals. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth, and don't be afraid to adapt when faced with new challenges, such as a career transition or personal development after redundancy. Think of any crisis as an opportunity for "post-traumatic growth". We always have a choice about how we want to deal with a situation. Do we want to go through it or?grow?through it???

?

Many moons ago, I studied for my MA in theatre, and there is a quote by Anton Chekhov that I love. He said:

'Any idiot can face a crisis; this day-to-day living wears you out'.

And he's right. That is why we must learn to balance our ambitions with our professional responsibilities. It requires strategic planning, a deep understanding of your values and priorities, and making informed choices about where to allocate our time and energies, but the payoffs are worthwhile. That's because cultivating mindfulness and a commitment to continuous learning can enhance your decision-making skills and help you maintain focus and stay positive in the face of stress.??

?

Finally, remember that your health and well-being are essential not just for your success but also for the success of your team or organisation.?

?

It is easy to think we need to do more and more, so we often say yes and get overloaded. However, please consider the instructions in an aircraft safety briefing - put your mask on before helping others. If you are doing everything, you become the single point of failure in your organisation and at home. If you break down, what happens next? By focusing on your own wellness needs, you allow yourself to help others more effectively. You also mitigate the risk of breakdown or burnout by saving the energy required to perform at your peak.

By prioritising your wellbeing, you also become a more effective leader, team member, and family member. This ensures you can continue supporting others without risking your health and productivity. Promoting a similar wellness culture in your workplace can also improve your organisation's productivity, employee satisfaction, and overall success.

?

So, here are my six considerations to help you achieve a better work-life balance, a positive mindset, and improved productivity and performance:

?

  1. Set clear, achievable goals that align with your personal and professional values.
  2. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and personal development.
  3. Saying no more gives you more energy to focus on what truly matters.
  4. Prioritise your time and energy based on your values and priorities. Do tasks that energise you, make a list of what these are and take note of what drains you. Can you delegate these tasks elsewhere?
  5. Practice mindfulness and commit to continuous learning to enhance your decision-making skills and maintain focus.
  6. Prioritise your health and well-being and promote a culture of wellness within your organisation.

?

By integrating these strategies into your daily life, you can more effectively navigate the challenges of your role, leading to more balance in your life at home and improved performance at work.

?

Good Luck, and remember...

Your day doesn't create your mood; your mood creates your day.

Really good read Nick and so important. I’m very guilty of getting lost in work and sitting from 8:30-6pm barely moving or getting any steps/fresh air etc. Balance is key.
