6 Ways Growing a Business and Growing a Family Are Alike

I’ve got big news to share! We’re expecting baby #2 in August! We are so excited to welcome this little girl into our family.

This season is full of lots of emotions and reflections, and it got me thinking about all the parallels that occur when someone is growing a family but also growing a business. Let me explain…

Investment of Time and Resources: Both endeavors require a significant investment of time, effort, and resources. Just as a business needs attention, nurturing, and investment to grow, a family needs time, care, and financial support.

Building Relationships and Teamwork: In business, you build relationships with customers, partners, and employees and you work with your employees and partners to achieve common goals. In a family, you also have to build relationships with your spouse, children, and extended family members to work together to create a safe and supportive home environment.

Problem-Solving Skills: In business, you encounter various challenges, from technical issues to operational problems, which require creative solutions. Similarly, in family life, you face challenges such as those dreaded temper tantrums, managing busy schedules, or juggling childcare, all which require problem-solving skills and resilience.

Continuous Learning and Growth: In business, you need to stay updated with industry trends, learn new skills, and adapt to changes. Similarly, in family life, you learn from experiences, seek advice, and grow as a parent, spouse, and individual.

Celebrating Achievements: Professionally it’s important to celebrate wins like hitting revenue targets or launching successful projects. Families also need to celebrate achievements such as milestones, birthdays, or personal accomplishments. Recognizing and celebrating these moments strengthens bonds and reenergizes everyone.

Balance: Finally, finding a balance is crucial in both areas. Balancing work and family life is a common challenge, as you strive to give adequate attention and time to both your business and your family without neglecting either. My priority is, and always will be, my family. But that doesn’t mean I don’t dedicate time and energy to growing my business and supporting my clients as well. It’s a healthy integration of work and personal that has taken years to accomplish.

I think when people can understand how these two things are more alike than not, it unlocks a new level of success in both aspects of life. The skills and strategies you have in one area are easy to transfer into another, it’s a win-win!

I’m excited to keep growing in both my home and my work life—with an extra sweet baby in my corner in just a few short months!
