6 Ways to Get A YES

Yes means growth. Yes means progress.

When we get someone to say yes we move forward. Things happen. At work and in personal life.

For instance, getting your future potential life partner to say yes can literally transform your life. Getting your boss to say yes to a new project you can work on can change your career trajectory. Convincing a potential client of a new product or service you are launching can create a new market for your business.

Only too often however we end up hearing a NO – whether it be on email from a colleague overseas who says they don’t have time to support what you need or from your boss rejecting a latest proposal you had made.

So how can you get the other person to say YES to what you seek. Here are 5 different ideas that are proven and tested to work. Put them to use and start measuring how often you can get a YES instead of a NO.

1.     GIVING Before You SEEK – The golden rule. What are you giving the other person before you are seeking their support ? how are you helping them…are you giving them time ? or something material they seek ? or even asking them what they want from you BEFORE you put your request to them. One simple way is to just ask “what can I do for you ? what do u need from me ?” Always start with this when beginning a discussion

2.     Gifting & Personalizing – In the world of work and in your personal life can you take out 10 minutes to find a small personalized message or gift for people with whom you have or want to build a key relationship. It can be anything. Something small, simple not grandiose to show that u think of them and care about them. Start your next interaction with that and see the difference it creates. Even a simple hand written thank you note goes a long way

3.     Helping & Supporting – How can you help others achieve their goals ? Who do they want to be connected to and what are they looking for ? What are your skills or connections that can become relevant for them ?

4.     Admit Mistakes and Issues upfront and ask for help – Sometimes when you are facing a NO it maybe because the other side does not see you admit your issues. Best to place the issues on the table and state clearly what your mistakes and issues have been and how you are trying to address them. You can often ask for help and advice to start….we want to do XX but we failed etc…what do u suggest I do…give the other person the position to make a difference

5.     Appreciate. Appreciate. Appreciate – It takes less than 15 seconds to give someone a genuine compliment but the impact lasts forever. Can you find those 15 seconds out regularly. The best way is to look someone in the eye and do it. If not meeting face to face send a nice email. Or a whats app or message. Everyone needs it. Everyone welcomes it. BE the person known to appreciate the best in others. Give people positive labels. You are very ____________ ( organized / loving / energetic ….).

6.     Show me the money – taking the much cliched scene from Jerry Maguire, show them what they will gain by saying yes. As specifically as you possibly can. Show them what they will lose by saying no.

You need YES in life to progress. Everyday. From everyone. Practice these methods and watch those NO or MAYBE turn into a giant thumbs up YES.

Aseem Puri - thanks for putting this together, a great read indeed. The 'Show Me the Money' fits right in when doing sales - creating that FOMO is an important piece in any sales pitch. What are some of your other inputs for B2B sales?
