As people and organisations move more and more towards remote working and remote communication methods, it is more important than ever to build a trusted, self reliant and engaged workforce. There are so many things that you can do to build engagement. After almost 18 years working across a wide range of organisations and industries, here are my top 6 tips.
1. Start with the basics
Many organisations spend a fortune on employee engagement surveys. Before you do the same, recognise that simple things can engage your employees such as good feedback, strong leadership, a clear vision and plan and most importantly, making sure that your employees have the basic kit and equipment they need. If you do these things consistently it will go a long way towards engaging your team.
2. Build trust and respect
One of the best gifts you can give your employees is to let them really feel what trust and respect is. Once they have felt that, they will build the fundamental principles that an engaged team need to be their best. Trust them to do their jobs well and believe they have the best possibe attitude from the start. No one performs at their best with someone constantly on their back and being micro managed!
3. Build from the bottom up
When building engagement, a bottom up approach is best. If you take time to connect with your employees on a personal level you will be creating strong rapport with everyone as well as an open and honest culture.
4. Know your team members
Learn what motivates each individual. Ask questions about your team members when you get the chance. Find out about previous successes, what motivates them and what grates on them. Showing an interest in your employees will make them feel valued. Even if you’re in a company of 100 people, you can still take time to connect with everyone and make them feel truly valued.
5. Encourage difference and authenticity
Recognise that diversity and a range of strengths, mindsets and perspectives are a massive win for your business. Encouraging challenge is crucial to building an engaged team. Make sure your employees know they have a strong voice and make sure they know that they can be themselves and bring their own unique styles to the table.
6. Encourage growth and development
Open the opportunity to connect, collaborate and grow your employees. In today’s workplace opportunitites to develop, grow skills and increase confidence build feelings of value and long term investment in success.
