6?? tips to create a well-structured and informative CV ??

Today, I want to talk about how to create an effective CV to grab recruiters’ attention and potentially land your dream job. Seems like there's a pretty straightforward approach to crafting a CV. However, in reality, it's more challenging than it appears. Having a nicely designed CV is great, but what matters is the content. From my experience, I've encountered situations where a CV looks impressive at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it either lacks valuable highlighted experiences, or the experience doesn’t match the vacancy, or it’s difficult to read the CV.

CV is your first point of contact with the potential employer and the chance to get an invitation to the interview. Remember what first impression you create, that’s how people will treat you further ??

Let's dive into the main tips for creating a CV that's not only visually appealing but also substantial.

1. Consistent structure

Keep your CV well-structured and clear. Always start with a summary which is followed by your experience. You should describe your experience by starting from the last place of the job so that recruiters can see your most relevant experience. After describing the experience, proceed with your education, extra courses, links to your pet projects and other initiatives if any. Show your ambitions and desire to learn new things. It’s important to keep your CV clean yet don’t try to be too short, your goal is to include everything that might be relevant to the position you target ??

2. Summary is a must

A summary is a condensed version of your experience, placed at the beginning of the CV where you describe the most significant use cases from your past jobs. Again, always start with your last, meaning the most relevant experience, to show recruiters your current level. When writing your summary, be direct and to the point. Mention your positions, durations, geographical focus, and main achievements (numbers, KPIs, percentages). Remember, you're not writing an essay, so aim to be brief while including all relevant experience, technical skills, and achievements important for the position ??

3. Don’t mix up

If you have diverse experience in multiple niches, avoid mixing them in one CV. Focus on the desired position. Tailor your CV by carefully aligning your experience with the position title, requirements, and desired skills. Consider creating multiple CV options if you have experience in completely different fields and use the relevant one based on the position you're applying for ??

4. Focus on your experience

Your main goal with the CV is to capture the recruiter's attention within the first 10 seconds, similar to marketing. Prioritize your commercial experience on the first page to demonstrate your suitability for the job. Education, interests and courses follow your experience.

5. Show your contribution to the business development

Highlight the measurable value, results and achievements you've contributed to your previous employers. While responsibilities are important, focusing solely on them isn't enough.

Structure your experience:?

  • Start with the timeline of your positions.?
  • Provide details about the companies you've worked for, their products, and market coverage.?
  • Outline your key responsibilities and the software/tools you've used.
  • Highlight your achievements, including KPIs, use cases, metrics, and numbers.

If you've been promoted horizontally, separate those experiences and highlight achievements for each position.

If you had your own business – describe how this experience could be valuable for the company you’re applying for??

6. Don’t overshare

One common issue is providing too many personal details, such as home address, multiple emails/phone numbers, etc., which neither recruiters nor potential employers need to know. Be clear and concise. Include only essential information like your country of residence, one email, and phone number for contact ?? These tips should help you craft an effective and informative CV.
