Jobs are becoming increasingly more competitive, making it all the more important for your CV to stand out. This important document should detail everything about yourself when applying for jobs. Your CV is a chance to show your prospective employer what you have to offer and to show off previous experience or achievements. To avoid your CV being thrown away, these are 6 things that you should?never?include on your CV:?
1.?????Personal Details
Some details you do not need to share on a CV. While you may think the more the employer knows about you the better, some things should be left private when applying for jobs. Instead, focus on being the best candidate for your work-related skills, unless any personal or family situation directly related to or affects the application, try to leave out the personal details.
This includes:
-???????D.O.B
-???????Sexual orientation
-???????Religion
-???????National insurance number
2.?????Irrelevant experience
The space on your CV is very valuable. Although your CV can theoretically be as long as it needs, most CVs will be 1-2 pages at the most. As the text on your CV is the most important detail, do not include any information irrelevant to the job role.
If you find you do not have much or any work experience at all, then include your experience from the most relevant to the least relevant. Expand on any previous work that includes the same skills or keywords for the role you are applying for, as skills are transferable and can still be relevant.?
3.?????Too much text?
While it's very tempting to get as much detail in as possible, it's important not to turn your CV into a wall of text. If the information is relevant and effective but appears to be paragraph after paragraph, then a prospective employer will not be enticed to read it.?
Split your CV into multiple sections, with different layouts and patterns while still remaining professional. An easy but effective way to describe key information is through bullet points. Try to include as many job-relevant skills in your CV, so at first glance, your CV matches your ideal candidate.?
?
4.?????Spelling and grammar mistakes
Potentially the easiest damaging mistake to make is not having correct spelling or grammar. If the role you are applying for does not require you to write or type text at all, having incorrect spelling is exactly what a prospective employer does not want from their ideal candidate, especially as it is so easy to fix. You can download many free spell checks to assess your CV or have family/friends proofread to make sure there are no mistakes.?
5.?????Inaccuracies
Being inaccurate or lying is CV suicide. Inflating grades or changing job titles may seem unnoticeable changes, but these small changes are considered fraud. As many prospective employers will check the information you provide, you could end up in much larger trouble. Make sure to always be honest in any job application document or interview.?
6.?????Inappropriate emails
Never include inappropriate email addresses. Many of us created email accounts at a younger age with no thoughts about job applications, however, hiring managers can throw your CV away without reading it if your main point of contact is inappropriate. As most email accounts are free to obtain, create a professional work address to apply for all job applications, this will make responding and organising easier.?
