6 Things You Need To Know If You're Interviewing In 2021...

Interviewing today is a complex process.

Nowadays, employers expect candidates to come in extremely prepared. Otherwise,?your interview can go south pretty fast!

Thanks to the internet and access to information about the company on sites like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Indeed, as well as the company's own website, job seekers have plenty of ways to study up on an employer before the interview. Doing an internet search and seeing what comes up is a no-brainer. One hour of research should yield you a ton of insight into what it's like to work for them.

That's why the following three mistakes in an interview will cost you the job:

  1. You don't understand what the company does.?No employer wants to hire someone who doesn't understand why they are in business. You should know what products and services they sell and who their target customer is.
  2. You can't articulate what makes the company better than its competition.?The company is in business because it believes it provides unique value to its customers. You?should be able to explain that value?and why you admire it. Employers hire people who are enthusiastic about how they stand out to their customers.
  3. Your first questions are about salary and benefits.?When it's your turn to ask questions, don't focus on WIIFM (what's in it for me?). That's the kiss of death. The time to talk about your compensation for your work comes later in the process when it's clear they want you for the job. Even if you couldn't find any info on this when doing your due diligence, you should still refrain from asking until you are further along in the process.

If you do one or more of the things above, you'll lose points in the interview. Why? The employer is going to pay you thousands of dollars in salary each year for your services. It only makes sense that they would want to make sure they're hiring someone who is smart enough to do their due diligence.?It's a sign you know how to be proactive and resourceful - two characteristics every employer wants a new employee to display.

Employers want certain things in every candidate. So, while they may not ask directly, it's up to you to know how to convey this information in your answers.

Now that you know the 3 mistakes, let's talk about 3 signs your interview isn't going well...

1) They Didn't Have A Good Reaction To Your Success Stories. You may have a story of a success that in the past has gotten nods of approval or smiles from your interviewer(s). If you tell the same story with the same zest, and you don't get the same or similar reaction, it may mean that they aren't listening, or they didn't get the point of the story, or missed the importance of your success.

2) They Seemed Bored And Distracted. If the interviewers keep looking at their phone or computer screen, they may be displaying their lack of interest in what you have to say, or they may just be distracted by something that is going on that is taking precedence over your interview.

3) They Didn't Tell You About Next Steps Or Ask If You Have Questions For Them. If the interview has gone badly, interviewers won't ask if you have any?questions for them, and they won't offer what the next steps will be. If you ask and they seem vague or reluctant to tell you by when they expect to fill the job, that is another sign that you probably aren't going to be considered as one of the finalists.

Sometimes circumstances are just out of your control, and there is nothing you can do to save an interview that isn't going well.
