6 things that I learnt during my first 6 months at Microsoft!
Rohit Arora
Chief Growth Officer (SUS) @ Compass Group India | Strategic Leadership, Market Impact | Angel Investor | ex Microsoft
1 - Growth mindset: Microsoft is one of the leading technology organizations with sufficient market acceptance for its products and it is this mindset that keeps us (employees) grounded and eager to learn more from our partners, customers and our competitors. This facet of the organization culture is deep rooted in all actions and behaviors. The openness is like a breath of fresh air and brings everyone closer, keeps connected with the ecosystem.
2 - Customer comes first: We exist because of our customers and there is nothing more important than our Customers. A customer centric approach is the real key to building long lasting relationships and business eventually. The focus is not only on selling but also on developing a sense of partnership and empathy with customers.
In our CEO - Satya Nadela's words, "In the case of business, empathy allows companies to understand their consumers and empowers their teams to create campaigns that resonate and build products that will sell."
3 - Be what you are! Excel in it: The atmosphere is truly energetic and flexible. I have experienced a real intrapreneurial culture with ample independence for executing my key tasks. I have also noticed people moving across geographies and roles as per their interests. There are internal hackathons, stretch projects and even interest groups for technologies, hobbies and various other initiatives. I have had my share of rewards and have also experienced immense recognition for performance! It's an inspiring mix of Independence and hunger for success.
4 - Communicate, Collaborate and Leverage: This is a large corporation with presence in multiple countries. Often, the wheel has already been invented and it is on us to smoothen the edges, make it move faster. With so many sharp and ready-to-help minds around, the key to success is communicating and leveraging past to make it effective in my day to day activities.
5 - Life matters too: Often, the pressure of work may bog us down but the support from management, peers and team-mates ensures that we enjoy a healthy balance between work and life. Office get-togethers have helped build a well-knit community and everyone is working for a common mission.
6 - Microsoft in Microsoft: There are multiple products and solutions that help address our customers' needs and it's a great to experience the benefits from within (as an end user). From extensive collaboration with Office 365 - Teams, Yammer and Skype to having our intranet portals on Sharepoint Online and apps hosted on Azure... We have it all. From Dynamics 365 that's so well tuned for our B2B selling scenarios to all-round security envelope powered by the Microsoft 365 components.. The journey is all so exciting and work is so much fun!
My #MicrosoftLife has just begun and these are still early days but the 6 months have been an exciting experience full of learning and engaging with smart people around. All organizations have their set of challenges and I hope the challenges here would bring out the best of me!
