6 Study Techniques to Boost College Success

Exams in college can be both exhilarating and anxiety-inducing for students. The key to success is being prepared. In this blog post, we'll explore six strategies to help college students navigate the challenges of exams and emerge victorious!

  1. Create a Study Schedule: A couple weeks before the exam, look at your calendar and be intentional about carving out specific days and times to study. By having a clear plan, you'll avoid last-minute panic and keep your focus sharp.
  2. Find the Perfect Study Space: The right environment can minimize distractions and external stimuli, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your work. This leads to deeper concentration and a quicker ability to enter the "flow state" where learning becomes effortless and efficient.
  3. Spaced Repetition: Don't cram everything in the night before! Distribute your studying over time with spaced repetition. Review key concepts at increasing intervals – once a day, then every three days, then a week, and so on. This reinforces learning and prevents forgetting.
  4. Test Yourself: Test yourself with flashcards, practice quizzes, or explaining concepts to a study buddy. This strengthens neural connections and improves long-term retention. One of the best ways to test yourself is to explain it to someone else. Try to articulate the concepts in your own words. This clarifies your thinking and reveals any gaps in your knowledge.
  5. Turn Off Your Phone: This sounds like a no-brainer, but it's tough to do! Your phone can have detrimental effects on your focus, memory, and overall learning efficiency. Your brain can only process a limited amount of information at once. When you're trying to focus on studying while also being bombarded by phone notifications, your brain has to split its attention, leading to reduced efficiency and potential misunderstandings of the material.
  6. Be Mindful: Acknowledge and manage exam anxiety through techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or spending time in nature. A calm and focused mind is more receptive to learning and performs better under pressure.
