6 Stages of Team Development
Most managers want to lead a high performing team. The question is – what causes a team to be high or low performing? One factor that most leaders are unaware of is the stage of maturity from which their team operates. The table below (thks Jan Rybeck) is based on decades of research on the stages individuals can grow through. In the data that we are gathering through the Vertical Mindset Indicator we are seeing that groups of people (i.e. teams) can also develop through these stages together.
Teams may operate from earlier stages of maturity (Opportunist, Diplomat), medium levels of maturity (Expert, Achiever) or into later stages (Redefining, Transforming). All can be appropriate, it depends on the goals of the team and the context that they are operating in.
To get a feel for how much these stages matter, read the table above and imagine what it would feel like to be part of each team. The most common teams we currently see in organizations are Expert and Achiever teams. And I've been told by friends who work in politics that Opportunist teams are plentiful :)
How teams can use this:
- Team members receive their personal VMI stage results (you learn about your own stage of development)
- The team receives their team stage results (you see we tend to operate together)
- The team discusses from which stage we need to operate from to be most effective vs the stage we currently operate (often there is a big gap)
- The team learns methods to flex into different stages depending on the need (when do we need to be in Expert mode? When do we need to be Transforming mode?)
We are watching teams have super engaging and impactful conversations about their stages.
If you have a team that you'd like to experience this with, let me know in the comments and I'll be happy to set you up.
Join the Webinar on 'How to Build Growth Networks' with Workday, Head of People Analytics, Phil Willburn - June 16 at 4 PM EDT
This session is not about 'networking' (arrrrgh). It is the science around why network connections matter, and why so many of us have ended up with ineffective networks in the WFH era. Phil Willburn knows more about this topic than anyone I know. This content might change the way you think about your relationships (it did for me). It's on June 16 at 4 PM EDT (click here for your local time).
