6 Social Media Myths Busted!

6 Social Media Myths Busted!

Love it or hate it, we all know that the beast that is social media is here to stay, and as a business owner, it’s almost impossible to ignore its importance in your marketing. But just like with any other mystical monster, there are plenty of social media myths circulating around its existence.

And it’s exactly these myths that make using social media in your business seem scary or too overwhelming to manage.

Thankfully, today, I’m busting 6 of these social media myths wide open for you!

Social Media Myth #1: You Should Be On Every Platform.

What business owner has time to be on Twitter?and?Instagram?and?Facebook?and?TikTok?and?LinkedIn?and…?

The answer is no one. Or someone with a dedicated social media team.

And truthfully, you don’t need to be everywhere when it comes to social media. It’s much better to show up strategically and engaged on one or two platforms than it is to show up haphazardly or half-heartedly on four or five.

Social Media Myth #2: Social Media Is The Golden Ticket To Growing Your Business.

Unfortunately, there’s no golden ticket that’s giving you access to the whole chocolate factory of business growth. Sorry, Charlie.

Yes, social media can and probably?should?be a part of your overall marketing plan. And yes, when it’s used strategically, social media can help to engage with your audience, promote your offers, and increase the success of your business.

However, simply showing up more on social media to send more DMs or create more reels will not be the magic bullet that launches you to the next level in your business.?

Social media should be used as a business tool, not a business solution.

Social Media Myth #3: The More Hashtags, The Better.

Simply hashtagging the heck out of each and every post will not bring you a flurry of new, engaged followers.

On Instagram, you can currently use up to 30 hashtags in every post, but conventional wisdom on how many of those you should be using is continually changing as the algorithm shifts and changes. Instagram?recently shared?that 3 to 5 hashtags are ideal, but that number can and will change.

I recommend using?tools to support your hashtag research?and continuing to make hashtags one piece of your overall social strategy.

Social Media Myth #4: If You Have Social Media, You Don’t Need A Website Or Email List.

No!! As amazing as social media is in helping to reach your audience, your social media account and content are not ultimately in your control.

If Instagram and Facebook disappeared tomorrow, how would you reach your people?

While this is not a likely scenario, I’ve known way too many business owners who have relied too heavily on social media for communication and promotion, and when their account became temporarily locked for one reason or another, they were stuck in a bad way in the meantime.

You own your website and those email addresses on your list. You do not own your social media accounts!

Social Media Myth #5: You Should Always Schedule Your Posts First Thing In The Morning Monday Through Friday.

This one may or may not be true for your business, but it honestly depends on your audience AND the platform you are posting to.

Ultimately, the best time to schedule your social media posts is when your people are most engaged. This may mean Wednesday at 9 am or it may be Friday at noon.?

Here are some recent recommendations from?Social Sprout?on the best times to post by platform:

Facebook:

  • Best times: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
  • Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Worst day: Saturday

Instagram:

  • Best times: Tuesday 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Monday through Friday 11 a.m.
  • Best day: Tuesday
  • Worst day: Sunday

Twitter:

  • Best times: Wednesday 9 a.m.– 3 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m.–11 a.m.
  • Best day: Wednesday
  • Worst day: Saturday

LinkedIn:

  • Best times: Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m.–noon, Wednesday 9 a.m.–2 p.m.
  • Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Worst day: Sunday

Social Media Myth #6: Social Media Is Free.

Okay, this social media myth is also both true and false.

Yes, you can join various social media platforms for free. However, growing your business on social media rarely occurs for nothing. (And I’m not just talking about running ads.)

If you want to see real, strategic growth and impact from your social media accounts, you’re going to have to invest. This may look like a team member to handle your social, a coach to help you strategize, or a marketing agency to run things for you.

At the very least, social media is going to cost you the time you’re putting into it, and as a business owner, you know that your time is worth a lot of $$.
