6 small changes in mindset that will change your life

Life is full of variables beyond our control. Events unfold, and people form opinions—often independently of our influence. But why do we internalize outcomes we cannot steer? Instead of trying to control everything, why don't we direct that energy at ourselves? That is, to control the way we think, the story we tell ourselves. How differently we would feel if we thought the following:

  1. Every event is an opportunity to learn

Whether the outcome is positive or negative, pause for a moment and reflect. Consider what went well, what contributed to the success, and what emerged from the situation. Analyze what went awry when the outcome fell short of expectations. How can you improve or approach things differently next time? Most importantly, recognize the lessons this experience has taught you. Without this introspective process, growth remains elusive.

  1. Find the positive in?setbacks

Take a moment before blaming your luck. Consider whether this unexpected twist could be an opening for transformation. Perhaps the journey turned out smoother than anticipated, sparing you from unnecessary challenges and stress. Remember, our human tendency is to notice the negative more readily than the positive. But it’s within your power to shift your perspective and focus on the silver linings.

  1. You can't control the opinion of others

Everyone's thoughts and conclusions are based on personal perceptions. It is part of one's own truth that arises through experiences, values or entrenched opinions. The fact is that we cannot please everyone, not because we are doing something wrong but because everyone has their own code of acceptance or rejection. Don't let yourself be influenced by the opinion of others. You can't control it so don't make it yours. What you can control is you and how your behavior affects others.

  1. Don’t take anything for granted

We take so many things for granted when in fact nothing is certain to exist the next minute. There are people who accumulate wealth (of course money is necessary), but they lack the recognition of their blessings. Count your blessings. Your health that keeps you away from doctors and hospitals. The people around you who are there when you need them. Shelter, water, heat, food, work, internet, entertainment, a warm bed, beautiful clothes and belongings. Do you know how many people in the world don't even have the basics to meet their basic needs?

  1. Learn to enjoy your company

It sure is nice to have people around to share a meal, a walk, a movie, a swim in the sea. But what happens when for whatever reason this is not possible? Many people shut down and isolate themselves when they don't have company to do something. But when was the last time you had company for yourself? When was the last time you took yourself out for coffee, out to dinner, bought yourself clothes? When was the last time you - without a cell phone in hand to hide the awkwardness of your loneliness - stayed with you, enjoyed your company, and chatted with you? It's not easy and it takes getting used to. Next time you're left without company, remember that you are your best company.

  1. Don't let the moments pass by

Work is never ending. But the moments with your loved ones never come back. Play with your children and let the clothes stay untied. Cuddle in bed, talk, connect and let the dishes stay in the sink. Sit and cuddle with your partner and let's order takeout. Our lives are moments of happiness that are a shame to miss.

Our reaction to what happens depends on our way of thinking and it is important to train ourselves to see each side of the coin. Once we realize how fleeting everything is, then we will appreciate each small daily event as a unique gift.
