6 Simple, But Impactful Tips To Become A World-Class Public Speaker & Trainer

6 Simple, But Impactful Tips To Become A World-Class Public Speaker & Trainer

If you want to become a great speaker or trainer, a major public speaking tip is that you must know WHAT to do and WHAT not to do.

And there are some small (yet impactful) differences that separate the world’s best speakers from those who struggle, and unfortunately never make it.

For example, winging your talk is not a good idea. If someone tells you should do this, and just “learn from the experience,” you should probably run from this person and not listen to a word they say.

Why? Because that’s just bad advice. Winging it is a disservice to everyone who is spending their precious time (and maybe even money) with you.

So, if you know WHAT to do and WHAT not to do, becoming a successful speaker and trainer is much easier.

Today, we’ve put together 6 tips that will make a HUGE impact on any future talks you give in person or online. Enjoy!

1. Be Yourself

One of the biggest mistakes I find most trainers make is that they pretend to be someone else. They assume they aren’t “natural” and try to act like someone completely different. Someone more energized or who speaks perfectly. There’s just one problem: It doesn’t work!

Here’s what happens when you give a speech or presentation that’s looks “perfect”: people get uncomfortable. They don’t like you, and they aren’t sure why. They know you can’t possibly be like this in real life, so they wonder what’s hiding behind the mask of your perfect appearance, perfect words, and perfect smile.

No one cares that you’re not perfect. In fact, most people love it! Because they aren’t perfect, either.

When you’re on stage or in any setting where you’re teaching a group of people, be the REAL you despite some of your imperfections or weaknesses.

What’s important is what you are teaching, the knowledge and information you provide, and what result it’s going to have for them.

2. Have Notes For Your Script… DON’T Memorize It

This is another bit of advice that people tend to find surprising. They think that memorizing their script makes their training more polished and professional. But the truth is, again, this just ends up looking and feeling inauthentic.

Personally, I need my notes right in front of me any time I teach. It’s okay to slip in some “ums” and “ahs.” It’s okay to stumble over your words from time to time. It’s even okay to lose your place! All of these “mistakes” show your audience that you’re a real person, just like them. And when people relate to you, it makes your training much more powerful.

Also, notes help you stay on track and stay consistent with what you are talking about. It puts less stress on you and only works in your favor.

3. Use Other Materials To Enhance Your Training Or Speech, Not As The Focus

Have you ever sat through a lecture where the speaker just reads directly off of the slides or a PowerPoint at the front of the room? Boring, right?

What you want to do is actually engage your audience – so use the slides as a way to move the training forward and reinforce important information, but don’t rely on them to deliver your training for you!

Ask yourself what you would like if you were in the audience. This will help you with the delivery of your talk both online or offline.

There are specific techniques to do this that I teach on my web class, “Teach And Get Rich." You can find more information about my free class here: https://bit.ly/TAGRInviteJuly2020

4. Do What Works For You Instead Of Following The “Rules”

Is your voice cracking? Did you lose your place in your notes? Are you visibly nervous? So what?! You’re human! You don’t need to master your delivery, body language, or speech to capture your audience and be effective in this business.

An important public speaking tip is knowing there’s no “right way” to be when you train other people, so don’t believe everything you learn about how to present or teach well. In my opinion, formal training on how to teach, train, or speak well isn’t worth your time or money. Why? Because again… you leave your session being less authentic than ever, with tons of so-called “correct” postures, gestures, and speech.

Remember: Your audience might be able to learn the information you’re presenting elsewhere, but they’re choosing you for your unique approach and perspective… so do what works for you!

5. Have Great Information That Will Help Other People

This one feels like it should go without saying, but don’t give a presentation if you aren’t going to freakin' HELP people! Is the information you’re teaching going to be useful in their lives? Are you going to teach them a new skill, or help them better understand a difficult subject?

If the answer to those questions is “no,”… stop what you’re doing right now. Go back and think about how you can approach your topic in a way that will help people in the best and most valuable way possible.

Ask yourself: Would I be THRILLED to be in the audience listening to my talk? Would it help ME in my life?

Again, if not, you need to go back to the drawing board and work on your talk.

6. Involve Your Audience

So often, I see people assume training just means reciting information to a crowd. But that’s not the reason you’re there – you’re there to help your audience learn something. Involving them makes it more fun, and it brings up the energy.

Ask questions. Make jokes. Make the training a conversation between yourself and your students. Not only will this make your training more engaging and keep the audience’s attention, but you’ll also be creating a deeper relationship with your students and enhancing your business.

There’s one method I use to do this with my audience. It’s considered “super learning,” and I teach you how to use it on my brand new web class, “Teach And Get Rich,” which you can attend for free.

Ready To Take The Next Step?
