2020 was such a tumultuous time for everyone on all fronts, between the issues around medical safety with the pandemic, physical safety with social injustice, and psychological safety with trying to find a new way of working, I really needed several people to help me. Of course, I increased my sessions with my therapist and reaffirmed family and social contacts via Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype, but I was not really clear on my personal goals and how I would use my existing skills and expertise to attain them. All of that changed, when I learned about coaching.
Some might say, "Shawn you have been working in HR for years. How did you not know about coaching?" Well, I had heard about coaching. I had even been coached for a while, and heck I thought I had coached others; but I had never really learned what coaching was. To put it simply, I had the wrong notions about coaching and never listened to what my previous coaches were actually telling me about coaching. So, as a part of my annual, self-development, or as I call it "my annual excuse to be a nerd and learn something cool budget" I decided to complete a certification in coaching with the goal of obtaining my Professional Certified Coach credential with the International Coach Federation.
Just a few months into the course, I learned about what coaching is and how to begin the process of coaching others as well as coaching myself. That self-discovery has been invaluable in helping me to set my goals, identify milestones, and encourage action. I have also learned that listening is the most powerful skill that we have as humans and that listening deeply to others is a rewarding. Deep listening is like a meditation on the client with their words and thoughts as the focus. That fascination and curiosity, made me think about how many others skilled and amazing people, may have the same misperceptions I had. I immediately saw my coaching skills as a valuable resource that I want to share with clients who want to achieve their professional and personal goals.
To that purpose, I crafted 6 Reasons to Work with an Executive Coach, but I encourage you to reach out and ask me any questions about coaching in general or to discuss working with me as a Coach. P.S. Right now my rates are incredibly affordable as I build my client base.
6 Reasons to Work with an Executive Coach
- To Harness Your Thinking: An effective Coach will help you to access your own innate ideas, probe your creativity, and leverage the power that is within you. Coaching helps you to harness your thinking to define your goals and objectives. Coaching is not therapy. Coaching is about you.
- When You Need a Partner: A true Coach is a partner on your journey to your goal and is willing to ride along as you discover the path you want to take to your goal; while helping you to identify obstacles. A Coach rarely gives advice, but instead is your partner as you learn and set goals.
- To Encourage Action: Coaches encourage clients to take action and evaluate the agreed to milestones. Hiring a Coach is like hiring a navigator who you tell the destination and the stops you would like along the route. Your Coach will encourage you to make those stops that take you to the destination.
- When You Need to Focus: Your Coach is a sounding board and a partner who can help you focus. Establishing a working relationship with a professional Coach, can help you to focus and put clarity on your goals. As you talk with your Coach, your focus clarifies.
- When You Want to Be Heard: Excellent coaches are deep listeners and able to fully communicate. As a client, you should find you begin to develop a rapport with your coach because you are being deeply heard. Your Coach will share observations that move you toward your goal or question your thinking respectfully.
- To Help Accountability: You may decide to work with a Coach because you want to create accountability structures for yourself. If you choose to or not, a Coach can collaborate with you on how you think that would work in relationship to whatever goal or goals you set for yourself. Your Coach is a partner.
